Academic Job Applications

I'm putting myself on the market next week, but I need some help properly assembling all the components of academic job applications -- the statements, the teaching philosophies, the letters, the CVs, and so on. Does anyone have experience applying for professional academic jobs at universities (particularly in the US)? Welcoming any and all assistance.

I've only done it when applying for advertised jobs, but I have done that successfully twice.

I should ask your PhD supervisor/mentor or someone similar to help you or give you tips - especially as you will presumably be asking them to supply any references.

Oh yes, been there! But in addition, I thought I would ping the 'lith for info, just because I feel like I can't have enough help, and because others here might also benefit from the advice.

I've applied for many, but not got one, which rather implies that my advice isn't worth the pixels.
Always directly addressing the job requirements can't hurt, though.

In some cases it may be worth contacting them by phone or e-mail to discuss the details of the post prior to applying, as this will both give you a better idea of what they're looking for in a candidate, and make yours a familiar name when your application does come through.

Plus it demonstrates that you are "enthusiastic and proactive".
