I was earning 60-something K when I was in the States with a couple of years less experience (though in more of a employee's market than Java); I'd go for more than that personally, I didn't have a lot of choice at the time. Regardless of the fact that that's hardly penury, if you're going to work for the Man you want to make sure you take him for every cent.
(For UK readers, you'd be surprised at how much further that sort of salary goes than it does in the UK when converted to pounds, with the tax differences and the way that cost of living works out. I earn about the same now, but I definitely live a more restricted life.)
I understand that contractors tend not to necessarily earn more than permanents in the US, though I may be misinformed; at least, the differential was less. The opposite is true in my experience in the UK, contractor rates are usually much higher than perm and if you can get regular contract work you're laughing. |
