How much I should ask for?

So, I've a job interview tomorrow, for a position as a software consultant. I'm quite likely to be offered the job, but I just don't know how much to charge.

Background: I'm a damn good Java developer, with about 8 years of experience, and am currently doing a masters in machine learning.

So, how much should I go for? $45 an hour? $65? $90?

How many hours a week on average do you reckon?

I'd go for $65-70 as a nice, safe middle.

Hours will probably be 20-30. $65 is the number that popped into my head first, but I just know very little about the consulting scene.

What city do you live in?

Well, with those hours if you stick at $70 and see what they say that'll put you at around $68,500 a year which is the American equivalent of £35,000. That's what a friend of mine is making for a similar role with half the years of experience.

Good luck with the interview.

Are you still in Boulder, M?

Yep, still in Boulder. After a little more consideration, I think I'm going to go with $75 and let them talk me down.

Or, perhaps even not let them talk me down.

I was earning 60-something K when I was in the States with a couple of years less experience (though in more of a employee's market than Java); I'd go for more than that personally, I didn't have a lot of choice at the time. Regardless of the fact that that's hardly penury, if you're going to work for the Man you want to make sure you take him for every cent.

(For UK readers, you'd be surprised at how much further that sort of salary goes than it does in the UK when converted to pounds, with the tax differences and the way that cost of living works out. I earn about the same now, but I definitely live a more restricted life.)

I understand that contractors tend not to necessarily earn more than permanents in the US, though I may be misinformed; at least, the differential was less. The opposite is true in my experience in the UK, contractor rates are usually much higher than perm and if you can get regular contract work you're laughing.

It really depends on the local wage. You can use Monster to see what people are making in your area of the country. Where I am on the East Coast salaries depend a lot on location. I can tack 20k$-30k$ a year on my salary by commuting an hour each way but for me walking to work and living by the ocean is pretty damn priceless.

I can tell you we hire Java developers at around 55k$-85k$ here in the sticks. That's with a package.

Sorry... for contract I double my salary/hourly (for taxes and medical). So what might be 50$ an hour I automaticly bump up to 100$. But if I like the project I come down a bit.

Currently I'm making crap but my company is tiny and very flexible. I show up in ratty overalls with purple hair and tattoos. 'Suppose it's better than the progenitor Unix Admin showing up in mustard stained white collar and smelling vaguely of pee...

As follow-up, I got the job, and at relatively close to my asking price. Thanks all!
