Can we make something happen at the Grammys by going viral?

Chaos is relative

I posted the following bulletin on myblog. I really think it would be a shame to leave this song out of the program, especially because TOOL is from Hollywood. There are bigger reasons that contribute to this. Here:

Fatal Grammy Blunder?
The Grammy's credibility dies unless 10,000 Days wins best song.

The musicianship is solid. That was an understatement. The recording is passionate. It is a tribute to his mother who died of cancer after battling the disease for 27 years. It is the most beautiful work of the year without dispute.

What a tribute: (Lyrics reprinted without permission.)

"10,000 days (wings pt. 2)" •

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there.
Not like you.

Ignorant siblings in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But, enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who
Illuminated your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

You are the light and way that they will only read about.
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
(With the) burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."

Wow, who knew the Grammy Awards still had credibility? Didn't they lose the last of it when Jethro Tull beat Metallica for Best Heavy Metal Album in 1989.

It is the most beautiful work of the year without dispute.

I fear you might be in for a bit of a surprise.

...but could Tool dude deliver a triumphant acceptance speech from the back of the stage?

The poster communicated popular opinion. That was an awesome statement.

Just the one, though. Maybe two. But no more than that.

with no offense at all being directed towards those who love the Tool, I am compelled by this post to ask, well, what is it that fills Toolies with this utter and absolute certainity that even the most casual listener must agree that their band is amazing? I mean, yeah, they're all right, if you're in the mood for like, soulful guitar music and all that, I suppose. But I've never understood the fanaticism that Tool creates.

Regrettable Juvenilia

It's by no means universal: I know people who are Tool fans (in the sense of rate them very highly and look forward to every album) who are free from any illusions about ontologically infecting teh system to communicate what teh people really think; I also know people who are not Tool fans per se but do a mean karaoke version of 'Sober'. Tool are a bit like The Invisibles, really, in that respect (and for the purposes of this post, that respect only, please): the reason they inspire a lot of mickey-taking on Barbelith is less to do with them, and more to do with the chaos, 11, 23, disinfnord, Rushkock stuff they sometimes seem to inspire or be connected to...
