I'm really excited about Ben Jonson, an excitement which often occurs when I discover someone in the canon but not well-known. Of particular excitement to me right now are the play Volpone, about an old trickster and so much more, and the epistle "To the Two Sisters" (Oxford and Cambridge universities) that accompanies it. I've not got the books to hand, but I thought I'd start the thread now to give anyone else who happens to be something of a Jonsonian a chance to jump in if they want to.
For those who've not read him, might I suggest the Penguin Classics edition of Volpone, which also includes The Alchemist and Bartholomew Fair. These are all plays, and they are all incredibly scathing whilst being incredibly funny in a way that few modern writers seem to acheive.
More coming soon. |
