The mythic films of Antero Alli

Some years ago, I decided to meet an author I was fond of. I had a hunch that he'd be at a screening of Antero Alli's most recent film at the time, Tragos (the screening having been announced on the author's mailing list). Anyways, I went because I wanted to meet the author; I had no idea anything about the film and just thought it would be kinda cool to try to meet this author guy.

I was blown away by the film, in a daze afterwards for days. From Antero's website:

"A sci-fi suspense; narrative fiction. Underground San Francisco, 2012. An urban tribe of technopagans practice their ecstatic rites within a virtual reality program called "Tragos". When one of them abuses the device as a suicide machine, a fundamentalist Christian prosecutor assigned to the case commits to their demise. A cyber-noir witch hunt unfolds to reveal a deeper story of love and redemption."

The film managed to snap me into ritual headspace. The virtual reality sequences felt like magic(k). Unlike a lot of "art films" that I've seen, Tragos had a coherent plot that was easy to follow, and yet it didn't feel overly simplistic or ideological. Some sequences belie a hint of amateurism, but it's not enough to put one off so much as it is actually engaging.

This was the first time I had really experienced film as art more than entertainment.

Since then, I've seen every feature film that Antero has made, and I've really enjoyed them all (some more than others of course). Every single one of them has hit me somewhere on a mystical level, even 'The Mind is a Liar and a Whore,' his most recent work that is a lot less outwardly esoteric than the others.

Have any of you seen any of Antero's films? What did you think?

For a long time, he did not sell any of his films and only screened them at small local venues from time to time (in the SF bay area), but recently he has decided to offer his works on DVD. I urge you all to check them out.

Oh, and I had posted a review of The Mind is a Liar and a Whore elsewhere online, and figured I'd paste it here too:

Antero Alli is a film maker, an author, an astrologer, a mystic, and an old school Discordian and friend of Robert Anton Wilson. You may have heard of his book Angel Tech, a guide to self-initiation. He's collaborated with Rob Breszny, and if you've seen those gorgeous collaged divination card images on Rob's site, those are Antero's work too. In short, Antero Alli is someone you should look into.

Last night, I attended the premier of his most recent film, The Mind is a Liar and a Whore. It is dedicated to Robert Anton Wilson, and it is one of the most fitting tributes I can think of (strange that it was already completed by the time RAW exited his body, and yet down to the Illuminatus! poster on the wall that just happened to be in the house they were filming at, this is a perfect memorial). The film follows the story of a group of people trapped inside their home together as their city experiences a bioterrorist attack. They question the world, each other, and their selves as they try to somehow make sense of the events going on around them. I won't say any more lest I spoil it for you. This film manages to capture the flavor of RAW's writings, the humor of the mundane and the profundity of the absurd. Find a way to see it.

I just wanted to update this now - all his films are available for sale on DVD. I only have one so far, but will be getting all of them.

This month, there's a retrospective of his work showing every Wednesday in Berkeley.
