With regards to the Modern Art/Shit On a Stick thread, what do you fellows think of the lowbrow scene? I think the term lowbrow art is used in a pretty broad way these days because it really is talking about 2 different movements. One is the underground comics-inspired, narrative-based art (Big Daddy Roth, Pizz, Coop, Robert Williams) that usually include images of hotrods and half/fully naked(not nude) women. The other school of lowbrow artists are commercial oriented artists who reach out into the gallery circuit with differently stylized, symbol-based works (Mark Ryden, Brothers Clayton, Shag). So anyway, the scene in pretty big here in L.A.. And for those of you who are made feeling like Contemporary Art = Shit On the Madonna, This may be something a bit more accessible.

Which one are you asking about?

In order to define itself, 'lowbrow' art requires a relationship with 'highbrow' art, and rather than destroying or subverting the latter, the former is playing its part in maintaining its supposed enemy.

is "lowbrow" more commercial? eg. coop's designs on stickers, t-shirts, skateboards, and shag doing album covers and handbags for paul frank? (incidentally, shag's handbag for paul frank is high up on my "things i want but can't justify the expense" list)
