With regards to the Modern Art/Shit On a Stick thread, what do you fellows think of the lowbrow scene? I think the term lowbrow art is used in a pretty broad way these days because it really is talking about 2 different movements. One is the underground comics-inspired, narrative-based art (Big Daddy Roth, Pizz, Coop, Robert Williams) that usually include images of hotrods and half/fully naked(not nude) women. The other school of lowbrow artists are commercial oriented artists who reach out into the gallery circuit with differently stylized, symbol-based works (Mark Ryden, Brothers Clayton, Shag). So anyway, the scene in pretty big here in L.A.. And for those of you who are made feeling like Contemporary Art = Shit On the Madonna, This may be something a bit more accessible. |
