I just saw Half Nelson last night, had never heard of it but bought tickets when the movie I wanted to see was canceled.
Ryan Gosling plays Dan Dunne, a young junior high history teacher trying to teach his inner-city kids about change, conflict, and opposing forces throughout history. He's depressed and parties too hard, drinking heavily and freebasing at night before another day in the classroom.
Shareeka Epps plays Dre, one of Mr. Dunne's 13yo students. Not spoilers to tell you they become friends after she catches him smoking crack... she is involved in drugs in other ways, as her brother is in prison for dealing and his former boss is trying to recruit her.
Gosling and Epps were both so wonderful in these roles. Their characters and dialogue were well written, incredibly realistic... I felt like I definitely know people exactly like Danny or could even be him. Though the subject matter and plot are wrenching and a bit depressing, the film thankfully never became melodramatic. It had something to say but wasn't heavy handed in saying it. Overall this is definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a while.... |
