'Barry Potter And The Staff Of Power.'

So, are we thinking thumbs up, or thumbs down?

From what I gather, Barry Potter is very much the anti-hero of the piece. Insofar as he's just left prison, and is a slave to certain ideas that he has.

Some of which go against the grain of conventional recieved wisdom as it applies to same.

Accordingly, Barry has various problems to do with the police and the social services. Apparently, he, Barry, is under the impression that he's attending a school for wizards, and that his wand is powerful, and in a way it is, I guess, but the so-called 'reality' of the situation is, as I understand it, much, much darker.

So, is this kind of thing acceptable?

Hasn't Viz done this? The whole 'strange deluded adult living in childlike fantasy world' thing is a standard basis for many of their strips.

I imagine that the author, if ze was here to defend hirself, would argue that while it's one thing to do a script for a one page comic strip, it's quite another to write a five hundred page novel.

And then fall over, perhaps.

But in a very loving way.

Waitwaitwait....couldn't they just take the 500 page novel and translate it INTO a 1 page comic? That would save alot of reading time, for sure.

I assume you're thinking of the Barry Trotter series aren't you?

I must admit I haven't read them, or the similar nasty books that followed for LoTR, Star Wars, Narnia and the rest. From the outside they looked painfully unfunny, consisting of piss-poor puns and fart gags. If when I die I have the choice between an eternity of Dan Brown books or this puddle of shit then I shall read Angels and Demons and Illuminati, Oh My! with a smile on my face.

The really weird thing is, a lot of those books are written by a guy called Adam Roberts, who also writes serious, high-concept sci-fi. It's a bit like finding out that Isaac Asimov wrote Tozzer and the Invisible Lap Dancers.

You know Asimov was notorious for his dirty limericks, yes?

Asimov was also notorious for writing into his stories women with large breasts who liked to have sex with characters who were middle-aged or elderly scientists.

Still, at least he didn't start a religion.

"Sales of the individual Barry Trotter titles now at more than half a million. The Barry Trotter books spent more than six months he Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller lists"

Crikey.

It's a bit like finding out that Isaac Asimov wrote Tozzer and the Invisible Lap Dancers.

Weirdly enough, that would come as no surprise, at all.

And if you disagree, you're probably a f***ing robot or something.

I've compiled a test;

Those interested in learning whether or not they're 'one of them' may be interested in answering the six, simple multi-choice questions that I've put together, in order to decide this one way or another.

Anyone who is not interested in this survey is ... well, I don't have to paint a picture, do I?

Anyway, I ... well, questions available on demand.

Although I've probably already said too much.
