This was fantastic. You've gotta give O'Reilly some credit for willingly doing this. O'Reilly also said in interviews about it things like 'satire is a vital part of society' and such. At several points O'Reilly actually made some moderately funny jokes (I watched both guys on each other's shows). And I say that as someone who is decidedly NOT a fan of O'Reilly and a big fan of Colbert & Stewart, et al.
He was very game to take all the potshots (esp. Colbert's opening "sexual predator" joke at the beginning of his show, given O'Reilly's past of sexual harrassment).
I did like the fact that the Fox show had no laughter allowed in the audience, seemingly, but a few of Colbert's jokes (one of which was "What gives you more inspiration and energy, Jesus Christ or Pat Robertson's protein shake?") elicited spontaneous laughs from the guys working the cameras or whoever on the set of O'Reilly's show.
Also: [Colbert is shown a picture of a bear, gets scared] "Um, is that a real bear?" and O'Reilly tries to be funny by saying "no, that's the editor of the New York Times." half-point to O'Reilly for trying to be funny and not often succeeding, but at least he was up for the wacky tone and didn't get pissed-off/self-righteous. |
