I like the fact that he did it in five pages.

yep. As he said to me (you should imagine this in a slow, lumbering tone from someone who appears to be a bit dull and not a little thick)

"I can't read long papers, so I have to come up with simple proofs that someone simple like me can understand."

His announcement to the department was also excellent,

"I've got a new paper. You can have a copy if you like."

People do this all the time, its just not usually for a million dollar clay prize problem.

Now, if I may be allowed to go off on a slight tangent: Can someone explain to me (in general terms) the process for calculating fractal dimensionality: where something like a rocky beach has 2.68 dimensions or whatever. I ran across the concept in Gleick's Chaos book a number of years ago, and haven't been able to find someone who is both a) capable of understanding what's going on, and b) capable of explaining the thing in lay terms.

Hia math fans. Sorry to bump such an old one, but I was wondering if anyone else had heard this rumour - I expect Lurid might be one to ask.

So, I heard from someone in the DPMMS at Cambridge that Perelman (moderately well-known guy who's been off the maths scene for a while) may have proved enough of Thurstons Geometrization Program that the Poincaré Conjecture follows.
The source gives this about 50/50.

So has Perelman has been sat in some lonely attic in St. Petersberg for the last several years and now come up with an amazing result? If so it will piss off any number of people who've been chipping away at 3D manifolds. Anyone heard anything more concrete?

I haven't heard anything, though being isolated in Ireland keeps me out of the loop in a sense. I'll ask around to see if I can find anything out.
