Can a pattent be obtained for an idea before one goes about telling others about it?

I found this bit of info in the FAQ at Trevor Balylis Brands plc , the guy who invented the Wind up radio, he always seems to me to comes across as trustworthy. The site offers good and clear advice without asking you to disclose your idea and there is also a free inventors pack you can download.

You cannot Patent your idea if it is in the Public Domain. Generally, your idea will go into the Public Domain if you disclose it orally or in writing to anyone who is not bound by a confidentiality agreement. An exception to this may be a Patent Attorney who is bound by professional regulations. If you disclose your idea to us without an NDA in place then you cannot Patent your idea. It also protects both you and TBB by making clear what is the nature of our agreement.

That link isn't working, but yeah i believe that is basically correct. It is also important to recognise that getting a patent can be quite annoying and expensive. You really need to go through an attourney that specialises in patents (i believe you can file yourself but im not sure about that) cause the general idea is to make a patent general enough to give you the maximum protection but not so general it will get rejected. Since if it is rejected information is in the public domain and you can lose your chance - I was told something like that by a lawyer... i'm hoping for my sake it wasn't just a scare campaign.
