Apparently, the United States are being spied on by Canadians. And what tools are being used?

Canadian Currency.

Source.

That's right folks. Now, who out there thinks this is possible? I realize that Whitely Streiber's Unknown Country isn't the most credible of news sources, but I still want to hear what other 'Lithers think of the possible ramifications of having tiny transmitters hidden in money.

But hey, maybe there are some positive angles on this topic...perhaps your legal tender could stop a sex offender.

Damn. I just made them a slogan.

You know, if spies used slogans.

From what I read in the papers I believe the transmitters were found in Canadian money, but it was thought unlikely to have been placed there by the Canucks. Commentators say the most likely culprit would be China, as they carry out an awful lot of industrial espionage. The main problem with the concept is that once you have slipped the coin to the target, there is a fairly high chance that they will, well, spend it, thus making it less than perfect as a method for spying on someone.

How dumb is this? Why use Canadian coins to spy on Americans? Americans dislike our money and avoid it and toss it, especially if it is a coin! This smacks of paranoia. If I went through the trouble of making a transmitter that fit in a coin, I think I would use the proper currency of the nation that I'd wish to spy on.

Really though, it isn't very likely that Americans will keep their own loose change on them very long, much less a Canadian coin. How utterly ridiculous.

I think they were in Canada at the time, so it's not quite as foolish as it may first appear. Let's see..... here is the Times' article on it, if anyone wishes further details.

art*canardo, while not disagreeing with your sensible scepticism, if you have to put coins in your iPod it may in fact be an electricity meter.
