What is the small, selectable thing on the left hand side of each colour bar?

On the left hand of the colour bar, you can select an invisible something as well as the text. What is that something?

What happens if you select 'Edit' | 'Select All' from your web browser? Do you see lots of invisible somethings?

It's a non-breaking space; there's one on the other side of the color bar, too, next to the poster's name—in fact they're all over the page. Presumably they are there so the tables will align properly.
