Animal Collective! Panda Bear! Our Brother
The Native!

How is there no thread for them already? Is there? Is there?

I love these guys. Nobody else does. I don't know what else to say.

Oh right- you can listen to them here: Listen here somehow

animal collective are incredible
completely in a world of their own

I think too often they get thrown in the "freak folk" category though. (funny enough, before that, they were being compared to Elephant 6 haha) sure they've worked with Vashti Bunyan, but the ties end right about there.

if you don't believe me, check out some of their earlier stuff, especially the album Hollinndagain. it's downright noise. some of the best noise I've ever heard too. "I See You Pan" would be a great song to have pleasant dreams to if it wasn't for all the ultra high-pitched tones and creepy, unidentifiable bubbley noises. and "Pumpkin Gets a Snakebite" will have you saying to yourself, "is this the same band?"

for something that falls between that and what they're doing now, listen to Here Comes the Indian, if you haven't already. the band describes it as "the album on which [they] all rock out," and in their own very odd way, that's sort of true. it's kind of like a good old psychedelic freakout... with lots of drums... and shouting... and weird vocal effects... and tons of noises that you really can't figure out for the life of you where they came from.

but yeah, great stuff.

Animal Collective are group I tend to find fascinating and frustrating in equal measure...

They're one of very few currently popular indie-ish type bands who are doing stuff that's consistently strange and challenging and who refuse to limit themselves to one generic/aesthetic area of operations... which is good.

It doesn't always work out though; a certain % of their output is absolutely astonishing after a bit of concentrated listening, but the rest is just teeth-grindingly infuriating. They're clearly extremely talented guys with a ton of great ideas and a unique vision, but all that bloody high-pitched warbling and "wheeee! let's pretend to be little children and run around in circles!" crap can be pretty hard to take.

So from the material I'm familiar with, I'd say that "Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" from way back is an absolute masterpiece, maybe one of the most affecting and original records of the past decade and still their best album.

"Danse Manatee" on the other hand is a borderline unlistenable bunch of fingernails-down-the-blackboard techni-colour vomit age whatever that communicates absolutely nothing.

"Sung Tongs" unfortunately justifies the 'freak-folk' accusation by mostly sounding like Tyrannosaurus Rex on even worse drugs... which is a bad thing, in case you were wondering.

"Feels" though is fucking great; it reigns in their more irritating tendencies, and is a really cohesive effort, returning to the balance between emotionally-driven song-writing and freaked out exploratory sound that makes "Spirit They've Gone.." such a keeper. Haunted Fun In Love Summer Wonder - yeah.

Maybe appreciation of this band is simply a matter of patience and waiting for the right headspace to develop.

Case in point, I've grown extremely fond of Panda Bear's "Young Prayer", which initially sounded utterly baffling, like some guy randomly howling like a polecat whilst constantly retuning a cheap guitar, but reveals itself after a few listens to be a really beautiful and powerful evocation of nameless, wordless emotional awe and an extremely rewarding listen.

Oh, and hey, since I still appear to be a moderator of this forum: would it be possible to maybe add Animal Collective or Paw Tracks to the title/abstract of this thread so it's clear what it's about..? - cheers.

Animal Collective is awesome, but the video for Who Can Win A Rabbit is downright righteous.

Also, I think Sung Tongs is a little better than you're giving it credit for. But overall, you're right. Having said what was said, above, I take it that not too many people are fans of "Freaky Folk" round these parts?

Speaking of which (freak folk) - has anyone heard Silvester Anfang? A so-called death folk band from Belgium, mefinks. They're playing The Luminaire (London) in february. Satanic folk no less. Sunburned Hand of the Man meets Rosemary's Baby. It seems I must go and check it out. They're latest effort is named "Satanische Vrede" ("Satanic Wrath"). Can't go wrong with that sort of name, can it? Website here.
