OK, so having just got a digital camera, i'd like to be able to post pics i take on the web (i'm thinking of reviving my currently dead blog as (in part) a photo blog, and would like the ability to post pics, or at least links to pics, on message boards)...

I'm aware of various sites which exist with free image hosting (Photobucket, Flickr, Imageshack, etc), but not sure which one is the best/simplest to use...

Is there a meaningful difference between them? Are there dodgy things about any of them (politically, say) that a conscientious person ought to be aware of? Which one would people recommend for a first-time digital camera user?

I use photobucket. It´s free, it works and it´s simple.

Flickr would take some beating, IMO. You could just use it for free hosting, but if you want to share your pictures with other people, contribute to a huge image resource, and/or get involved with a community of photographers to any degree (and you'll probably find that you will), then I don't know of any rival that can touch it.

Lots of Barbeloids use it (there's a Barbelith group), and Cal Henderson (who built the code behind Barbelith) is one of Flickr's founders. It's one of the best things on the web and gets better all the time.
