Historic UFOs

There's this guy here who's assembling a gallery of UFO photos.

Nothing special there... except these are all from 1946 or earlier.

Before the term "flying saucer" was coined, before the crash at Roswell.

Airships ahoy!

(there's a larger version on the site.)

Damn, I just had this on my weblog like two weeks ago! I like the artwork page better. When I see UFO photos, I'm more inclined to think of fakery since I've done a bit of B+W photo processing. There's something about the UFO/Jesus/Virgin Mary connection that I find fascinating too.

Was Jesus truly the Son of God or just an advanced alien?

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Lovely find, grant. The most extraordinary image is this one, which appears to be a medieval painting with a hit counter. Iconoclastic technology, anyone? Presumably it recorded the number of times the thing was looked at...

I love the Lab - when I was about 13 I had a book all about UFO's including accounts of them visiting hundreds of years ago...really loved that book

so what does everyone think about UFO's anyway, have we been visited - is there a government coverup?

I've personally met too many reasonable people who have seen something inexplicable to discount them. Whether they're alien or not remains to be seen - after all, an SR-71 Blackbird can do "impossible" maneuvers, and can "disappear and reappear" and they've been public since the mid-60s.
I don't buy a lot of abduction stories, though.
And I'm not sure there's a cover-up as much as there is bureaucratic closed-mindedness.

Oh, and on that "artwork" page - traditionally (even in the Bible), there's a category of angels called "Thrones" who typically appear as wheels in the sky. (My angelology 101 is escaping me right now, but I'm pretty sure it runs Powers, Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, and so on. The Thrones are the least humanoid.)

Personally, Im a great believer in the incompetance of bureaucracy. That is, if the government knew about alien UFOs I dont think they could keep it a secret.

Ah, but the conspiracy theorists would argue that they haven't kept it a secret. The truth has been revealed, it's just that no one will believe it.

Grant you seem to have lots of "stuff" I remember reading theories years ago about UFO's actually coming from inner earth, do you have anything on that?

Haha! Good point. No argument, no amount of evidence and no proof would sway a committed conspiracy theorist from the "truth".

Personally, I need more than some bad photos and some evidence that the government has been lying (the government always lies).

Indeed. Who was it said that "A great many open minds should be closed for repairs"?

there are vast web databases on UFOs & Hollow Earth theory. Richard Shaver is a prime starting point. (i remember a friend reading aloud one of his articles at an open mike. it was really quite something.)

There's more Hollow Earth stuff here.

If you're curious about more, let's start another thread for it... the Thule Society and Koreshans, polar explorers and robotic entities... it's all fun.
