Ok, Google doesn't seem to think Barbelith already has a thread on this show.

Did anyone else watch it? The basic premise was that it was a spoof, presented "deadpan" as if it were real, of 70s and 80s educational television. The first series, from 2002 (which the BBC have been repeating recently at somewhat random times on BBC3) consisted of 10 minute episodes spoofing "Programmes for Schools" style educational programming (the sort of thing that used to be (and probably still is for all i know, tho probably in a slicker format these days) shown in schools, for example at the start of a science lesson. Write that down in your copybook.)

The second series, from 2004/5(?), was in a more conventional 30-minute comedy show format, and still had a theme for each episode but was expanded to a format more like that of "Tomorrow's World" (which, IIRC, it was actually presented as "the never-before-shown competitor to" when it was first shown) - with 4 presenters who went and interviewed "scientists", did news segments on new "innovations", etc, rather than the single narrator of the first series.

I've seen about 4 episodes of the 8-episode first series and 2 or 3 of the second series, but am intending to get hold of and watch all of it...

I'm thinking about getting my brother either the first series DVD or the second series DVD for Christmas (unfortunately i can only afford one of them), as i'm pretty sure it fits well with his overall sense of humour (he's a big fan of The Framley Examiner, "League of Gentlemen" and "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" - i'd recommend (what i've seen of) "Look Around You" to fans of any of the above and/or most of the works of Chris Morris). I'm leaning more towards the second, as there's a bit more material on the DVD and it's a bit more like a "proper" comedy show format.

Was there any commentary on this here when it was being shown on BBC2 originally?

Look around you. Look around you. Look on Youtube, where the whole original series is up in its entirety

As much as I love the 2nd series (and Synthesizer Patel is my hero), I'd say to get him the 1st series. I wouldn't worry about lack of content on the disc (the extras are OK though). The shows, although short, are just so perfectly formed and unique that surely he won't care...

LAY reminds me of the Simpsons at its peak, where the sheer unexpectedness of a joke has me marvelling at its genius. I also love that it operates within a parallel world of logic/fact, but without any explanation (eg. St Frankenstein's Eve and the extra lyrics to Happy Birthday in S2).

Also on YouTube, co-writer Robert Popper on Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe talking about Star Quality, the show which influenced Series 2. This MUST BE SEEN! (Starts 40 seconds in)

Watching these on YouTube. Not much to say that hasn't already been said (top humour, great use of old fashioned colour and film stock).

"The show featured a semi-fictional periodic table,[1] featuring Water (symbol H20), Wood (Wd), Toronto (To), Christmas (Xm) and Manganesium (Mngm) among others."

I loved it when the guy was boiling the egg and finally decides to use the spoon. So lol.

The first series is an absolute gem but the second was terrible. It's hard to say why this is, but I think it's because the second tried so hard to be wacky and parody Tomorrow's World, where the original just went for a simple spoof with surreal elements.

Well, i've bought him the second series (which i thought was a lot closer to "straight" comedy than the first, ie i suspect a broader section of the population would "get it", whereas the first is somewhat more of a "minority" brand of humour), largely because it was cheaper on Amazon, but/and will direct him to the first on YouTube...

(sadly, i don't have sound on this computer, but will almost certainly watch the whole first series with my bro on his, much better, computer over xmas...)
