Jindabyne

I’ve just finished watching the Australian movie “Jindabyne”. 4 men from the small town of Jindabyne go fishing one weekend, and in a watering hole, they find the body of a murdered woman. The men decide to tie up the corpse and not contact the police until they have finished their fishing expedition a few days later.

Tensions spill out, particularly in the family of Stewart Kane (Gabriel Byrne) and his wife Claire (Laura Linney). The emotional discord brought forth by the recovery of the body allows the movie to explore issues of race in (contemporary) Australia, Aboriginal funerary practices, Aboriginality, post-natal depression, parenting, family and compassion.

Through a lot of the movie, we see the perspective of Claire (Linney) – she sees the issues raised by the movie differently, she sees things clearly – particularly with regards to race.

So, I found Jindabyne to be a very fascinating movie – I loved thinking and feeling these issues. There are also some scary scenes involving the killer of the girl. I’m wondering if anyone else has seen the movie and what they thought of it?
