Why isn't the Laboratory more like this magazine. It looks so cool and futurist and awesome.

I only recognized it when they showed the contents page... I only became aware of Science News in the early 80s, late 70s when it had that same logo.
The new look is great, though. I think it looks even more "1950s," but it screams "advance!" to me.

quote:But even for a print publication, Science News is a record-breaker. The 16-page weekly magazine hasn't had a redesign in 80 years.

That is, until now.

"It's the first time anyone has taken a look at the whole magazine and made changes cover to cover," editor Julie Ann Miller said.

"We wanted a cleaner, more modern look," she said. "It had sort of a 1950s look to it. I didn't feel the style did justice to the really good content we had."

I was never that impressed with the stuff inside - preferred the now-defunct "Science 83" (I think it went up to Science 87). Then again, I was in high school, so that may have colored things.

This makes it sound really attractive:
quote:Articles in the 1930s discussed a new theory that the universe appeared to be expanding, later known as the Big Bang Theory. The magazine also reported on AIDS and autism before either of the diseases had a name. Albert Einstein and other prominent scientists served as guest writers.

Oscar-winner and science-buff Marlon Brando has called the magazine several times to speak to writers about articles in the magazine.

He called writer Corinna Wu to discuss an article she wrote about mosquito attractants. It turns out that mosquitoes are a pesky problem on his island in the South Pacific.

"He was very thoughtful and seemed to know a lot," said Wu, who spoke to Brando for about 45 minutes about mosquitoes and other science-related topics. "It was a really interesting conversation."

The web site ain't nothing special, design-wise, but I like the story on spontaneous cow abortions

Actually, the whole idea of a food science column is pretty cool.
