I'd have to see the programme itself, to judge whether it's distasteful. I don't think it's inevitable. Obviously if the programme's all fast cut 'Tomorrow! On Celebrity gang rape! The victim's topless photo's! Cause a stir in the courtroom!' cut to footage of the victim looking foxy in a suit and crying into her hands, then yeah the programme obviously is going to be grotesquely indefensible. But, that's not really BBC 2's style. I think it looks interesting and as well as providing an insight into the jury process, it could well elevate the public debate surrounding rape. I believe a recent study mentioned in the switchboard forum flagged up attitudes that people found problematic - comments that sleeping with someone unconscious made you only a bit guilty, that kind of thing. A platform like this could address that kind of - uh - intellectual bereavement with the kind of discussion they're presumably looking to engender (judging by the mix of wife beaters and crime victims). Of course it might be ghastly, but it could be worthwhile. |
