Well, it's not nice to gloat, and he should have been brought to justice. But, still, fuck you you fucking fascist, and good riddance.

Now, hey there, didn't he save the Chilean people from those pesky Commies? Could've been a Cuba Mark 2 there now. Just sayin that tho he was a murdering bastard he might be co-credited (along with M. Friedman) with having laid a sound economic foundation in place for Chile. And it's not like he killed or tortured as many as Castro & Co....

Yeah! Corpses need a sound economic foundation.

The other thread is for seriousness. This one is basically for me, a Chilean/Celt/Anglo to piss all over the knobber.

Gotcha!
Hey - it wasn't like I was trying to criticise your rage. Errrr... Mebbe I was.. But by all means, count me in for a turd or three casually catapulted in his general direction.
Just cause he was a useful asshole doesn't take away from his asshole-ness.
You could say that asshole-ness was his overriding character-trait.

i'm curious what you feel the problem with cuba is, lesmontes. specifically, i mean, rather than just holding up the commie bugbear and assuimg we'll all 'get it'.

perhaps the other thread would be a more appropriate venue, but i would certainly be curious to find out what you feel castro has done that pinochet saved his people from.

all i can think of is the inevitable american aggresion that came with the cuban ties to russia.
arguably the ties to russia were only necessary because of the almost fanatical ameican aggression towards communism, but that's perhaps another discussion in itself.

so yeah.
hop on over to switchboard and share.

Oh, comeon! Only after the US had persistently attempted to destabilise the Chilean economy while Allende was in power!

i'm shockingly ill-informed about pinochet (*GOSH! SHOCK!*)

But does anybody else have an image of a wooden doll with a long nose, wearing a general's costume?

Pinochet-o!

But yeah, i'm all for the death of anyone who is friends with thatcher. (Maggy Thatcher/ put her in a bin/ stick the lid on/ sellotape her in! etc.)

you might find this timeline of american intervention of use, lesmontes.
likewise this, this and perhaps this.

oh, and this.

OOOOPPPS... this was meant to be a bit piss-taking and a bit edgy, but it totally fell through mefinks...

toksik - Wikipedia-presented opinions range wildly on the extent of political persecution in post-revolution Cuba. I think what I was getting at is that it's gonna be interesting to see the world's reaction to the possibly quite imminent death of Castro, compared to the spectacle Pinochet's exeunt.

But, I hesitate to enter a debate about the relative merits or not of an alt-history Allende-ruled Chile and what came to pass after Pinochet's coup. Not because it's uninteresting, but I simply don't have the knowledge to feel comfortable saying anything worthwhile on the board.
So, yeah, I cop outta that one - BIG TIME...

you'll forgive then me if i assume that is because you have come to understand the untenable nature of your previously stated opinion, and that you are scared of discussing things that you know deep down you have swallowed whole without examiniation.
this may not be the case, but i have a feeling.
i'm sorry if it isnt accurate.

i'm pretty sure you havent checked the links i offered either, as any one of them would have been a struggle to read by now. the intervention timeline takes a good ten minutes at least.

ignorance is a choice, and you are free to make it as you wish.

(i am aware of most of the human rights abuses in cuba listed on that wikipedia page. i have at no point suggested they did not exist, but have instead asked you to substantiate your claim that pinochet 'saved' people from communism and that chile could have been worse, it could have been like cuba.)

toksik - sorry i don't have time to go into detail atm... gotta go in half hour.
no i didn't look at the links - but somehow i doubt that i'd be blown away. for the time being, all i'm saying is that i trust neither the received version that is promulgated on the left, nor that of the right. i feel i have no choice - not enough info to make a firm stance. and perhaps, a lack of motivation to so do, to be perfectly honest-

however, i promise that unless i take a good look at your links, i shan't post any more on the topic of P's death or related issues as per above, neither in this or the above-linked-to thread.

good.
if one is to choose ignorance, then it is probably best that one also choose not to share it.

toksik -just one tiny comment on that last one. now, i haven't looked at the links you provided. if i'm to judge by your last posts, they contain what you see to be the best accounts of .. whatever this thread is panning out to be about, Chilean politics, Pinochet, US involvement.

i take exception to your suggestion that since i haven't read your info, i am somehow ignorant. please refrain from further BS in the future. i also said that i might just go and read them when i've got the time, and if doing so i'll be able to enter into a reasoned exchange. name-calling does not motivate me to do so.

thanks for your time, catch you all later!

Got to be said, toks, that you taking this line with a newbie is sort of hilarious. Any chance we could just chill a bit?

you don't know, because you havent followed them.
i would suggest you refrain from commenting until you have remedied your ignorance.

i take exception to your suggestion that since i haven't read your info, i am somehow ignorant.
what do you think ignorance means?
i'm not sure we are using the word in the same way.
i use it here to mean a lack of knowledge, being uninformed. it could be worse. you could be calling pinochet useful with full knoweldge of his crimes.

please refrain from further BS in the future.
i don't believe i have engaged in 'BS', and would like it if you could either explain that or stop saying it, especially in light of your accusation:
name-calling does not motivate me to do so.
where did i call you names?
only you and haus vhave called anyone names in this thread, and only haus has called you anything.
he called you newbie, which doesnt seem all that aggressive, although i can see how you might not enjoy it.

ahem.

toks, montes: i'm sure you mean well, but you are both failing miserably to engage properly with this political debate.

I feel i might be able to offer you a helping hand - a pointer for how to go about this kind of serious, informed dissection of a political figure:

*clears throat*

MAGGIE THATCHER!
PUT HER IN A BIN!
PUT THE LID ON!
SELLOTAPE HER IN!

IF SHE GETS OUT,
KNOCK HER ON THE HEAD!

GLORY GLORY!
MAGGIE THATCHER'S DEAD!

-

See?

I hope this has cleared things up for you.

.trampetunia - i see that and raise with

Agadoo do do do Maggie Thatcher on the loo
Agadoo do do, She is having a poo
To the left to the right She is sat on the toilet seat
She will fart like a dog If you kick her in the teeth.

or
We had joy, we had fun,
We had Maggie Thatcher's bum,
But the things we like best,
Are the big things on her chest.

The kind people
Have a wonderful dream
Margaret On The Guillotine
Cause people like you
Make me feel so tired
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
Please die
And kind people
Do not shelter this dream
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make the dream real
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make it real

Morrissey - "Margaret on the guillotine". Nay, they art not breasts but bulbuous pod-people items. Aliens with breasts, don't make me laugh...
