GTA: SAN ANDREAS - Give me a challenge

Inspired by the other thread on open ended games…

So I’ve had GTA: San Andreas for about a year and I only have the final mission left to complete. Unfortunately, I’m a bit rubbish and can’t seem to do it… I’ve nearly completed all the other mini-games and seem to spend most of my time playing it but not actually doing anything constructive, just causing mayhem…

I need a new challenge. Something ultimately non-productive - just a cool thing to try and see if I can do. Can anyone suggest any fun pseudo-missions to attempt, or any funky hidden stuff to amuse me?

Have you tried doing a bicycle holiday in san andreas? Taking proper rest breaks, maybe taking a camera and some photos. There's a hell of a lot to see. Maybe you'll find yourself in the desert? In fact, I'm off to start mine now.

It's much more fun then using it as a break for your speed come down. Bearting randoms with a baseball bat for three hours is not a fun thing for your friend to walk in on.

Get three stars worth of police after you, then cycle up the entire of that big mountain without being killed and/or arrested.

Try to take back territories using the Harrier. I'm sure it's possible.

get a BMX.
go to the drainage canals.
540 off the walls.
it takes ages to be able to pull it off, but when you do, you will feel like a king.
after that, try rodeo flips.

i also advise trying to do backflips on a scrambler.
best place for that is the hills.

cube : take back the territories with the Sea Sparrow - the small chopper, it has pontoons and a machinegun. You can find one on the southside of the dam, and occasionally in the furthest NW town at the helipad. Fits 1 passenger too, so you can pack a homie in there, or even use it for most dates. Makes missions a lot easier too, if you can swing it.

There's also a "fast-bike" challenge similar to toksiks BMX suggestion: head to the San Fierro docks, just north of the military base and the container ship. Under a semi-circular roof, you'll find a sort of concrete half-pipe and an NRG-500 - getting on the bike starts the challenge.

Although, if you really want to increase the life of the game, and have SA for PC, I'd head to SA-MP.com - multiplayer GTA! There are a number of fantastic scripts to set teams (Vagos vs. Cops vs. Pimps vs Triads, etc.), or make impromptu car-stealing missions (100 people all trying to steal the same car = laffs). Good fun.

Off topic, but curious: How playable is GTA:SA on the PC with a keyboard and mouse? Is it worth getting?

Having played 3 and Vice City, I'd say it's perfectly playable. There's no auto-aim so your ammo runs out a little quicker, but otherwise it's fine. I do recall there being a pretty serious bug in the PC version that prevented you from winning the mission where you have to ride a motorcycle into an aircraft unless you played it at 640x480 resolution, so remember to install the latest patch for the game if you intend to play.

Everyone has that bug? Man, I thought it was just me. I'd done everything else but some of the best missions lie behind that one... I must Return to San Andreas.

I'd always played it on the PC, but a fairly primitive PC still running Windows 98. It wasn't exactly smooth-running. Has anyone got any experience of the game on the Xbox?

Dropping the resolution is also about the only way to complete the dancing and lowrider missions.

Oh that hurts. All this time I just thought I was a lousy dancer. I can't tell you how many nightclubs full of people I've offed because of my shame. And now I find out it's just a resolution thing?

Nah dude, the snide comments when you hit the wrong button are calculated to make you go into a baseball bat/grenade rage at all the hipsters round you. Totally justified, innit?

Baz, it's the only way I play - I've tried it with an Xbox controller, and much prefer keyboard/mouse. Having asked around the multiplayer server, it seems that 90% of the players there do the same. It's tough to get that headshot accuracy with anything else.

The bug issues are totally new to me, though - I've never had to change the res to finish a mission. Though I would have appreciated such a quick fix on the "bike-into-plane" mission. I'd be wary about installing the patch unless you positively have to - it sort of "breaks" the potential to mod the game, if you're into that.

Hmm... Here's two. Bumper-car fight a police helicopter with another helicopter. It has to be unarmed, otherwise the temptation to unleash merry machine gun hell upon those bastards is too great. Just keep bumping into them with your helicopter. If you can make them both explode while hopping out and parachuting to (relative) safety, you are The Winner.

Another one - crash land a plane into a gang fight at speed, parachuting out before hitting the ground so as to land and lay about those fools with guns, bats, whatever you want. You get points based on how many you kill with the plane's impact.

Not points from the game. Points from me.

Can these points be exchanged for prizes?
