I think it reads better as a whole and that Ellis' structural approach will be best judged once the series first year/arc is over (not that comments about the structure as it emerges are not valid).
Ellis is very much a wait-for-the-trade author and this series is proving to be no exception; I'm wondering why he isn't given more of an opportunity to do OGNs rather than pamphlet series -- he may not be quite at the level of a Moore or Morrison, but he's certainly demonstrated that he has a recognizable brand. Or perhaps he should be encouraged to go more in line with some of the early issues of Planetary, the spirit of Global Frequency, and the Apparat Books -- self-contained shorts. Though I think he is at least in talks for more Apparat.
I'd still like more emphasis placed on the whys of the White Event and less on the government task-force response -- possibly by outing the supers so we can have a greater range of responses to them. But, I know, patience.
Justice and the City have been fairly well-set up thus far and I did not miss them with the new issue & the into of Psi-Hawk.
Justice and the City are both of, for me, the less interesting threads in the series -- Ken's remorse intrigues me, while Nightmask and Proudhawks are being set up as the leaders / centres of the White Event supers. I'm hoping, though, that Proudhawk doesn't die as in the original NU, and maybe we can be spared even more super-bodies in Psi-Force.
And where the hell's Jenny? She's by far my favourite character and we only got the barest opening to her thread... |
