I'm only a couple chapters/stories into it, but Accelerando is pretty good so far, even if it's following along with the singularity meme pretty starkly. Smartly, though. I particularly liked that Stross was willing to have another character criticize and tear down the initial protagonist Manfred's ideas, refining them and teaching him something useful after so much time was spent making Manfred cooler than thou -- but it being entirely positive, an experience that enriches Manfred. He's got an interesting personality that always skirts just barely below the messianic vibe. Annette, as well, is proving to enjoyable and I hope she continues in some capacity after the current chapter (The Spring-Heeled Jack One).
Not sure how I feel about the interspersed "news bulletins" detailing the world around, because it wasn't as interesting as reading the actual narrative; I skim the infodumps like vague wiki articles. When Stross is just fictioneering it's much better, clearer, and more playful, and doesn't feel as over-expository as Cory Doctorow's approach to similar themes and settings. |
