I refer to the abstract until further notice!

Don't know if this isn't at all what you're after, but I usually - of late - resort to making of the foody presents. It's quite chris-tastic in a way, and often the pressie can last a long time - I get people saying 'hey i used your [insert food thing here] in a recipe the other day' in june.

I do a masala curry powder and make funny labels for the jars. I've also done a green salsa that worked okay. I'm trying to think of something new this year. My wife does pan forte and always gets a rousing reception.

I've also done the food thing with great success. Perhaps the best was home-made pasta - green, red and orange fettucine made with organic flour, eggs from our chickens, and veges from the garden (silverbeet, beetroot and pumpkin). Chocolate chip cookies go down well too!

I'm a fan of the hand-made present generally, both for giving and receiving, but I acknowledge that it does involve more time and effort.

this is completely subjective, but the best present I could recieve is a coffee mug with the the words "Jamaca Me Crazy" and the Jamacin flag on it.

I've been making home-made versions of abstract board games; this year it's "Zertz," but using industrial steel washers as the board pieces and stained wood balls, 1" marbles, and twisted wire balls as the three types of game pieces.

The food things are a lovely idea. What is Pan Forte?

Every year I give people a bottle of sloe gin but as a consequence of the regularity they've come to expect that now, and it's not counted as a 'main' present.

I'm going to make my sister and my Mum lemon curd I think, because they love it.

That hardly seems fair.

I suppose it isn't really!

Other things to make if you can sew:

Scaves out of old velvet. I made scarves with little hand made labels on, velvet on one side and satin on the other when different sided scarves were all the rage.

Cushion covers - out of strips of old velvet, sewn together in lots of different colours. These go with anything. I gave them to everyone I knew one year and they all still have them in their houses because it doesn't matter what your decor is.

If you can't sew but you are artistic, you could use PMC (Precious Metal Clay) to make buttons, or brooches or earrrings. All you need is a kiln to fire it in and most colleges have them and are generally cool about public access. PMC is basically silver but in clay form. It's uber-clever, extremely cool and in my opinion it's quite easy to use.

Another thing - I've just been commissioned to make up jewellery for an art student which he is designing. He's designing pieces for his family and then it will be my job to reproduce them for him. Normally jewellery designer-makers do their own designing, but I am happy to make up his design so I'm sure other designers would be. I think it's a really cool idea of his and it's a lovely personal touch.

pan forte is an italian dessert. it means 'strong bread'. It's chocolate, nuts, dried fruit and spices (including pepper). It bends spoons when you stir it. Maginificent.
