LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Robert Altman, the caustic and irreverent satirist behind "M-A-S-H," "Nashville" and "The Player" who made a career out of bucking Hollywood management and story conventions, died at a Los Angeles Hospital, his production company said Tuesday. He was 81.

This is very sad. He was one of the greats.

Ooh, that is sad. Even though he was really really old, it's still bad news.

Very sad. This past year I've seen a lot of his stuff and from the 70s through today, he's just kept making fantastic movies. I doubt anyone will ever have a decade as strong as his work in the 1970s, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Nashville, and Three Women are some of the best movies ever made. And he's got a whole bunch of minor masterpieces beyond that.

He certainly lived a rich and full life and left his mark. I forgive him for Dr. T and the Women.

Wow.. Very sad news. He kept on doing what he loved, year after year: making films. When someone makes a movie every few years, a few are bound to be a little weak (Pret a Porter, the infamous Dr. T and the Women)....Altman had so many incredible achievements as a filmmaker that it really drowns out all the duds. Plus, he created a style that was all his own. A college film professor introduced me to Altman and I'm very thankful for that.

Man he was good. He was good. At 81, though, it's hard to be depressed about it. He certainly did a lot in that time.
