Hehe. Aibo-hacking. I wonder how long it would've taken for the "killer" software package to come out. A whole generation of robotic guard dogs...

Yeesh.

The short of it is that a guy called AiboPet reverse-engineered the inner workings of the Aibo's electronic "brain"... you know, architecture-specific instructions, stepper motor commands, the works. Then he wrote and released free add-ons for the thing, that taught it to do new stuff. The same basic thing Sony was selling, except free. Eventually Sony told him to stop, and he did, but it pissed a lot of people right off.

quote:One of AiboPet's biggest hits was the program that teaches Aibos to two-step. Like Kevin Bacon in the movie Footloose, he won gratitude for the gift of dance—and Sony discovered what the town fathers in that film learned: forbidding dancing is really, really bad for public relations.

quote:For the time being Sony and AiboPet can work together. Sony permits AiboPet to distribute his experimental software, and AiboPet permits Sony to adapt it and sell it, should they ever choose to do so. "I believe many features and ideas of mine have already snuck into the official product line," AiboPet says on his Web site. "I'm not complaining—I'm flattered." From the user's perspective, though, it is hard to imagine that many other software designers will be eager to extend Aibo's skills under those conditions.

I see why Sony decided not to sue. They get the wonderful publicity as well as everything the guy ever wrote.

I wonder if he will continue to write more software for Sony to steal -- I mean take and 'modify' -- from him.

Ahh well.

Well, I'd wait for the "Browning v1.0" device driver to come out before I started worrying about robotic guard dogs.
