So, I'm just starting Altered Carbon because I saw it mentioned here and it reminded me that my brother read it two years ago and told me it was good. So far, I'm liking it quite a bit. In high school I read a lot of sci-fi. Primarily sixties/seventies stuff (Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Samuel Delany etc.). Then for a long while I just didn't happen to read much in the way of speculative fiction at all. Recently, though, I've eased back into it, starting with Philip Pullman, trying out George R. R. Martn (didn't care for it so much), jumping back to Mervyn Peake and finally discovering Jeff VanderMeer and China Mieville. And now Morgan. Aside from the fact that Peake is obviously not very modern, I'm now wondering what other current writers of sci-fi or fantasy are worth looking into. I'm more interested in people with well-developed characters and interestng prose than I am in straight idea men or hard sci-fi (which is not say that those things are mutually exclusive. Any recommendations welcome.
