Baby born with tail hailed as Hanuman

The tail is 4 inches long, the Muslim baby is being worshiped by Hindus.

quote:Iqbal Qureshi, the child's maternal grandfather, is taking Balaji from temple to temple where people offer money to see the boy.

Mr Qureshi says the baby has nine spots on his body like Lord Hanuman and showed them to journalists, reports Indian newspaper The Tribune.

There have been other cases of babies born with tails. A report appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1982 by Dr Fred Ledley.

His paper entitled 'Evolution and the Human Tail' concerned a baby born with a 2in growth on its back.

He's not Hanuman, he's a very naughty boy.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

A friend of mine was born with a tail (which his parents, wisely, had removed when he was a child), and has grown to be a very unemotional adult; a failing we take to come from his inability to wag, 'puppydog'style. Apparently it's more common than you might think.

I wonder if the family will convert to Hinduism...interesting, with all the tensions in between Hindus & Muslims in the area, that Balaji should be born there at this point in time.

They don't consider him to be hanuman only because of the tail.

quote:The child, who was delivered by a Muslim lady Salma Begum at Nabipur village in Fatehgarh Sahib district on February 15 last year, was brought here by his mother, maternal grandfather Iqbal Qureishi, and some other close relatives. He had a tail, a mark of Gana (a thread Hanuman used to tie on his left arm, according to popular images) and an injury mark on his left foot (Hanuman is supposed to have sustained a similar injury when Bharat shot at him with an arrow).

That's awesome. That kid should breed and form a new race of tail people or something.

I wonder what kind of structure's in that thing. If there's any sort of bony tissue, it'd be bloody painful bent the wrong way...

It looks like it has a joint or two in it, more like a finger than anything else (ok...we all KNOW what it looks like in that picture...shut up!). Chances are, though, that its probably nowhere near as articulated as a monkey's tail, for instance.

My question is: what kind of pants do you need to wear with that thing? I mean, the clothing behind that is going to be very odd. I'd imagine that the kid's sitting posture isn't too great, either, as most chairs are meant to accomodate people with backs and butts relativly devoid of additional appendages.

Does this mean he can eventually turn super-saiyan?

Hindus seem to like monkey-gods, don't they?

Well, Hinduism does have a monkey god, so yes.

I'm sort of a non-Hindu fan myself.

This incarnation is doing a lot better than his last. Remember a couple years ago when the monkey that got on top of a Hanuman statue in some temple and stayed there for weeks until it died? Wasn't that also hailed as an avatar of Hanuman?

alas

I find myself speculating on what difference it would have made had the child been female rather than male. I suspect a female with a tail would be more problematic, less likely to be worshipped, but that's a gut reaction, and so quite possibly "bollocks," as some of you say.

We should introduce him to the white buffalo.
