Hare-brained schemes

I was chatting to my partner in the pub last night and something she said reminded me of something I used to do as a teenager - keep massive lists of things I was interested in, to be followed up at a later date. These lists would say things like: Can (German band), Insects, Plunderphonics, Japan (country). These were all to be followed up a later date. Obviously, many of these came to nowt but many led to interesting tangents like to borrow Krautrock through the inter-library loans system at Ilford library, writing to a penpal in Trinidad or going to meetings of the Anarchist Black Cross prisoner support group.

I think when these actually came off the paper and became actions of whatever sort, they qualify as hare-brained schemes. The best ones are ones which lead to you contacting and meeting people who you'd never have met in a million years or cultivating unusual (for you) skills.

Obviously the study of martial arts and occultism (two of my big interests) are both nothing more than extensive, elaborate hare-brained schemes. HBS can include any kind of pursuits: musical, culinary, artistic or simple information gathering though the best kind of hare-brained schems is one that leads you into strange and unfamilar territories. My current one is trying to do Crossfit which has so far led me to join an Olympic weightlifting club and contemplating learning to walk on my hands (I'm really going to have to do this one). My partners currently include obsessing over the history of science and it's 17th Century origins and reading the Capitan Alatriste novels in the orignal Spanish.

So, simply put, what are yours?
