I love art! But... I have a vested interest, as it is in fact my job, lucky ol' me, to write about art in a slightly mercenary (and therefore never critical, sadly) context-- I focus on everything from Impressionism to the present day. I sort of agree with the original sentiment about there being an underrepresentation of arty subjects on the Lith. But then again, I do little to rectify that situation and have not posted for some time... Every time a good art conversation gets going, it seems to be subsumed by a thread on the importance of waistcoats or heels, neither of which are subjects I would wish to disparage, but which are evidently of more moment and interest within the Art, Fashion and Design forum...
There was a good intense thread once on the whole art and contemporary art question in which I seem to recall that I mentioned that I have a sort of extreme ambivalence about a lot of the scene of the past half century. I love some of the mind-games, the tricks, the concepts, the crossword-like process of seeing what an artist is doing or saying. But at the same time, I hate the fact that it is so arcane, caviar to the general but often of little interest to the wider public.
That said, it was a wonderful revelation to see the vast crowds and queues in the Edinburgh Mueck exhibition. |
