I love art! But... I have a vested interest, as it is in fact my job, lucky ol' me, to write about art in a slightly mercenary (and therefore never critical, sadly) context-- I focus on everything from Impressionism to the present day. I sort of agree with the original sentiment about there being an underrepresentation of arty subjects on the Lith. But then again, I do little to rectify that situation and have not posted for some time... Every time a good art conversation gets going, it seems to be subsumed by a thread on the importance of waistcoats or heels, neither of which are subjects I would wish to disparage, but which are evidently of more moment and interest within the Art, Fashion and Design forum...

There was a good intense thread once on the whole art and contemporary art question in which I seem to recall that I mentioned that I have a sort of extreme ambivalence about a lot of the scene of the past half century. I love some of the mind-games, the tricks, the concepts, the crossword-like process of seeing what an artist is doing or saying. But at the same time, I hate the fact that it is so arcane, caviar to the general but often of little interest to the wider public.

That said, it was a wonderful revelation to see the vast crowds and queues in the Edinburgh Mueck exhibition.

There are plenty of, honestly fairly average, summaries of the history of art on the net. A quick google search will deliver an arm load. A good place to start for an overview.

In terms of docos. If you want tongue in cheek "Art Safari" and Matthew Collings "This is Modern Art", both UK productions and on the side of: Is contemporary art just a big sarcastic joke?

If you want US "Art: 21" is really good for artists POV but pretty Americocentric.

If you want my opinion the point of art is subversion. So if you don't like it you're probably in the majority

As soon as finals are over (in about two weeks) I'd be happy to start new threads (or contribute to existing ones) about:

Tadao Ando
Santiago Calatrava
Gerhard Richter
Sally Mann

I'm assuming it's ok to include photographers and architects.

Does anybody know anything about sculpture? It's one area where I'm almost completely ignorant, particularly about anybody still working. I'm not very good at starting threads but if people would be willing to jump in and help suggest some questions, that would be great.

gourami, calatrava is an interesting choice because within certain architectural circles, he's considered an interloper, a cold engineer who creates structures rather than architecture.

I am interested in art. quite a fucking bit. but for some reason I tend to use only the comics thread on barbelith.

I will endeavour to check in here more often in 2007 and hopefully add to the debate.

Sorry, I've been out of barbelith for a while. Anyways. this thread rocks, and if there's a post on Richter, I'll be super-excited. He's one of guys that the High Museum here in Atlanta (get a membership if you live in atlanta!) actually have had several pieces by and I'm always fascinated.

Also, didn't Richter do some work with Bill Frissell in the past few years?

I have the start of a thread on Richter that I tried out on the dog, but because the first work I mentioned was Eight Gray, the dog decided to have a long and almost unbelievably boring conversation with itself about how My Kid Could Do That.

So, maybe I need to rewrite.

Also, yes! Calatrava is a very interesting love/hate character.

Gourami, I suspect that the word perfectionist swings into descrfiptions of you every now and then! I don't think your thread has to be the greatest thing EVAH before it is allowed to poke it's head into the forum. Just a thread would get people talking don't you think?
