Saul Williams

This shall be the new Saul Williams love thread.

My GF came home from work this afternoon and told me that Saul Williams was going to be at a local CC (about 45 miles away). I called in sick and went looking for people to take with me.

Took us forever to find the place and to find our way around the campus in the dark but we got there right on time.

The evening was started by the colleges poetry society (the dead poets ) who did much whining about how rough it is in big bad northern Seattle. Lots of "revolution now" type stuff and Saul Williams knockoffs. And some bad rap.

But then Saul Williams came out, introduced three times as "Sal Williams" by the guy running the event.

He only did a little poetry and it was almost all stuff I'd already heard on the album and in his first two books (except for a 911 poem and an excerpt from his next book). Mostly it was Q&A, but it was cool.

My favorite bit (on the war against terror and his appearance on Politically Incorrect): "Its crazy that I'm considered a Radical and they're considered Conservitive when they're the ones that want to go out and kill people. And they're killing the in our name. In your name."

He's not really just 'music'. He's also Magick, Conversation, Books, Switchboard, Head Shop, Film...

Leave it here. Or make it a roaming thread in some way...

Its funny, sometimes I think Barbelith is more a Saul Williams web site than a Grant Morrison one.

As far as a good intro, I would recommend the movie Slam just because you can rent it for a couple of bucks and take it back. I'd recommend the books The Seventh Octave and s he next because hes first and foremost a poet and, as he said last night, he writes his poetry so it will be the same sitting on the page as it is being spoken. s he comes with a spoken word CD of some of the poems and is some really personal shit. I'd recommend the music CD, Amethyst Rock Star, last just because I'm not big on the music that backs him. Its stil very good, though, and growing on me. He also has a couple of tracks on the first Lyricist lounge CD.

Man, I wonder if I'm the only guy who dislikes Saul Williams here. I tried. I just think he's lame, lame, lame. For real.

Saul Williams is not lame. I completely agree with Bio on the fact that Amethyst Rockstar is backed up by the biggest lot of lamo-rap-rock toss ever, but lyrically - I mean read his poetry - this man is GOLD.

"Coded Language" had the best lyrics to any hip-hop track, or song, period - and it demonstrates exactly what happens when a good producer gets his hands on the man. I'm expectantly waiting for a sophomore album produced by someone more cutting-edge (take your pick). This theoretically could be one of my favourite albums of all time, theoretically. The potential is there.

I was looking at some of my old posts the other night and thanking Christ that those threads were floating near the bottom of the forums they're in and now this one pops back to the top. Weird.

What was that Flux? You'd rather hear about broken glass in a tenement?

The early singles showed a lot of promise that the album just couldn't deliver on. Twice the First Time, Elohim and Ohm are among the best tunes in my record collection, they still blow me away every time I hear them. Coded Language is brilliant but preachy (although the section where he starts to call down the gods is one of the most electrifying things I've heard, period). I agree that he's got the potential to make a classic album. Send me your address via PM if you want a CDr of his music (it'll get sent after the twentieth).

I imagine it's pretty easy for people to get annoyed with Saul Williams based on the extent to which he's over-sold by some of his fans. You know, like saying that 'Coded Language' has the best lyrics to any song ever...

He's quite good.
