Lewes 2006

Firework night in Lewes is like no other in the UK. It's weird, feels dangerous, has LOTS of fireworks and more than a little whiff of left-over sectarianism to really bring an edge of not-very-niceness to what is a dubious celebration in many ways - especially if you're in any way Catholic, lapsed or otherwise. That said, it's an invigorating maelstrom of fire and tonnes of black powder, and more than a little chaos on the South Coast.

I haven't been to Lewes on firework night since 2004, but will be there this year. Are any Barbelithers attending?

Two years running I've taken time off work AND told the guy organising the coach trip I was up for it. Bah.

Let's hope there's a cancellation.

(by someone booked on the coach trip that is, not of the fireworks)

Ah! I'll be there with her ladyship that night. Give us a ring and we'll try and hook up. It might be a bit difficult due to my family being around an' that but It would be groovy to hook up.

I'm in two minds, we're going if we can get a lift but isn't it a mission to get home?

Wasn't too bad last year, there was maybe a 20 minute queue for the Brighton train towards midnight, quite free of the seat-hungry stampedes, gougings and disembowelments we'd been led to expect.

Lewes is basically the Slaughtered lamb from 'American Werewolf in London' writ large.

I have a feeling I was the Slaughtered Lamb last night, writ huge.

That was lots of fun, but I wish I could actually remember the fireworks. I am inordinately glad that the coach driver lives in North London, so the drive home passed my house. Yay for not having to navigate home from the centre of town.

Sorry we couldn't meet in a more salubrious manner, my old friend. The crowds were a bitch to navigate. Still, see you soon, no doubt.

What did they burn this year?

As much as I love Lewes, burning gypsy caravan effigies isn't ever a good thing.

Steve Irwin.

I shit thee not.

A giant paper mache Steve Irwin was put to the flame.

Weird!?!

Apparently it was done as a tribute to the great croc tempter. Difficult to see how that one works really...

"We love you Steve! We love you so much that YOU MUST BURN!!!"
