Probably a Mordant one.

^ Barbelith makes a funny "in" joke. ^

And they said it couldn't be done.

I'm prety sure we've had complaints in the past about there being *too many* in-jokes...

I do forget sometimes that sarcasm doesn't read well.

Char Aina
15:52 / 25.10.06
man, NONE of this is funny!
i'm off to stormfront.

In my perfect world, that is the name of a Billy Joel fan board.

There's a certain Barbelith look I think, although I can't define it. You can usually identify 'lith people in a pub, whether goth or crusty or smart or casual, there's just some indefinable quality we exude.

Ah, that was it- geek.

ONLY NICE THINGS
16:54 / 25.10.06
Well, you were WEARING T-SHIRTS SAYING "BARBELITH" last time.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
16:56 / 25.10.06
Oh, I don't want to hear it. Exude geek you might, but at least there's safety in numbers where you are.

Over here....'Lithers are hunted.

Char Aina
16:58 / 25.10.06
speak for yourself.
i'm a powerful alpha-man-beast with a stride like a lion's and a steely gaze that puts me in mind of superman.
my presence is felt like you would feel the ocean at the bottom of the marianas trench; powerfully.

i'm about as geeky as achilles, dude.

ONLY NICE THINGS

It's a point, actually. I don't look geeky. In fact, my stonewashed black jeans, blouson-style leather jacket, dyed black hair and sunglasses bespeak a man at the very top of his professional game as a writer of modern horror. Although I prefer the term "dream weaver".

your feet certainly weave dreams on the dancefloor, mr M.

I'm more into my "ironic hipster geek" chic. Does that count?

Kali, Queen of Kitteh

*sigh*

Wasn't really what I meant, but whatever....

Quantum

As I say, there's just some indefinable quality we exude. It's subtle, but it's there, maybe it's like gaydar but for geeks. Powerful dreamweaving geeks, like the Marianas trench in stonewashed jeans, alpha geeks who could kill you with their thumb.

STUNNING REVELATION!!!!
Haus = Andrew Eldritch*

Kali we just have a much bigger island than they do so it is hard for us all to get to the same pub. However we do get the added bonus of being entranced by their fabulously exotic accents when visiting their island....and repeating "what did you say" like old deaf aunties.

*yes I know who the description actually points to but the mind rebels and this was the name in the next slot over.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh

Haus was supposed to be Tennant.

And I agree with you, xk, we have the disadvantage of living in a much larger country than our cronies, but meet-ups in the States can be done. Nay, they have been before.

I live juuuuuust across the border from xk, too. Just sayin' is all.

Maybe it's time to organise an North American meet. It's been about six years now.

Yeah, sure you guys can sort it out. When myself and mono went to New York and met various people (of whom I think Qalyn and caleigh may be the only ones still here) Baz Auckland got a coach from FUCKING CANADA to come and see us. What a guy!

I'll get on this.

There's a certain Barbelith look I think, although I can't define it.

I've thought about this a fair amount, also.

Basically, it seems to be do with being the kind of person who wasn't exactly first choice for the notional sports team at school, but is defiant, damnit! And has a strange look in their eye! As if they know about the lizards, really.

Another way of looking at it would be; pretty much all the gents have either beards or glasses, and pretty much all the ladies have either glasses or dyed hair - if I was to advise a stranger as to how to hook up with Barbe-types in a pub, I'd advise seeing about glasses, dyed hair, beards; pick the crowd with the most of these, and nine times out of ten, I think you'd be fine.

Or, again, 'raddled, slightly disappointed Bohemia'

Or both.

Wow, I had no idea all the guys on Barbelith--at least in the UK--were bears.

It explains so much...

I think to be a bear you have to actually suit a beard, as Dr G and Xoc clearly do.

There are those of us who, when we grow beards, look like tramps. This is not bearish, merely uncouth.

I'm glad you piped up first. What is the etiquette for mentioning zealous bulges?

I don't think there is a particular etiquette, Coq (ho ho).

Oh! We can do this - xk can tell Kali about the Tennant resemblance or absence thereof. Not sure I see it myself. Regrettably, to the best of my knowledge penis size remains obscure, but a couple of episodes of Torchwood and, realistically, we'll all be faxing bits of ourselves across the world.

Can i just add dancing to the Barbelith sterotype. From what i've met IRL there is a lot of grooving. May not be any good or even in a suitable area but Barbelith feet like to do a shuffle or two.

>Are you insomniac?
Surely not.

>Do you read comicbooks?
Very rarely.

>Do you practice magic?
On occasion. One never knows.

>Are you a creative (art, music, prose)?
Nope. I am shamefully derivative, and can sing nothing original.

>Are you sexy?
As an acquired taste.

>and beautiful?
No.

>Are you homosexual?
Not quite.

>Are you liberal?
I'm a liberal fanatic.

>Are you a Grant Morrison fan?
No. Amazon seem to've lost my copy of t' Invisibles somewhere.

>Are you educated?
Yes, in Natural Philosophy.

>Are you insomniac?
Surely not.

>Are you insomniac?

I'm I truly allowed to speak of such things? On one hand the possible crushing of a dream, on the other the birth of a doomed stalkerish kind of romance. Wait...a...minute....

Uh not to get all source material on you but...

I need them smart, and I need them good looking.

that's us kids, right there.
