From Nature
quote:Two new clean-up techniques may help to reduce the pollution from burning fossil fuels. Chemists in Germany have used a green solvent to remove sulphur from diesel1, while biologists in the United States have bred bacteria that gobble up coal contaminants.

Along the same lines:

Chicken poo may be future fuel.

Considering the unbelievable amount of feces that industrial meat production produces (I live in North Carolina, which is wall to wall hog and poultry farms in some rural areas), this seems like a good idea to me.

I read in another article (that seems to have disappeared off the net) that the exhaust does not smell like shit, but like wet tobacco.

Bacteria also create power, too.

quote:Bacteria could clear up oil spills and generate electricity at the same time. US scientists have identified microbes that produce power as they digest organic waste1.

The bacteria strip electrons from carbon in ocean sediments to convert it into the carbon dioxide they need for metabolism and growth. Usually the organisms just dump the electrons onto iron or sulphate minerals on the ocean floor.

But the bugs will just as happily pile electrons onto one electrode of an electrical circuit.

really intrigued by idea of bacterial power...it's not like we don't have a surplus of decaying organic matter...please post more.

also, this could be a gainful use for those skinheads they were talking about in the Conversation.
