Quake 2, Dune 2000, Half-Life, Unreal, C&C: Tiberian Sun, that Jedi Knights game, that web game that's popular at the moment where you have to create large maps of linked names and nouns. All games which I've played and, at some point before the end gave up. In each case there was some nominal difficulty, in Half-Life I couldn't turn the fan on without getting sliced up by it seconds later, but this was really a tipping point after a growing dissatisfaction with the game, with Unreal I remember feeling that it was just never going to end.

So what games haven't you finished and why? Or, what makes you stick at a game even when, as mentioned in another thread, you've been killed 20 times?

I don't ever really say "I'm never playing this game again!" so much as just "I really don't want to play that game right now" which happens everytime I look at the game because all I can think of is whatever part I'm stuck on. The other factor is that usually my brother would end up beating a game (while I watched) and then by the time I was half way through he would come home with a new game, and the old one would be forgotten. These two things together make the question "what games have you finished?" much easier to answer than "which games did you give up on?". It's actually become a bit a running gag that I almost never finish a game, but recently I've been beating them before my brother does (because he's busy in grad school and I've got the resources for obtaining the games first for once).

Having said that, there a few notable games I haven't ever finished. First, my dirty secret - I never finished Final Fantasy 7 or Secret of Mana, my two favorite games. I watched my brother beat both of them, but I never took the act to completion (though in SoM, I did get to the final boss, I just didn't want the game to ever end, so I never beat it). Second, my big regret - Deus Ex. I really want to finish this game but I never have. One day. Finally, Earthbound. I rented it when it was new and got all the way to the end of the dinosaur world before I had to return it (stupid three day rentals). I've always wanted to see the end but I've just never gotten around to playing through all the way.

I'll think about what makes me stick at a game, and I'll come back if I figure it out.

Most of the time I put a game down and never finish it stems from two things:
1)The last boss is so hard and save point so far from said boss that it just isn't worth it to continue to loose.
2)When trying to get all items in the game. MGS 2 is still not beaten this way. But I don't ALWAYS get all items in every game, just those that are worth it, like GTA.

Currently it's God of War's 2nd stage in the last fight against Aries where the attack of the clones on the disintegrating asteriod while protecting your family, gets frustrating and pointless inching second-by-second (for it's timed) toward the last, final, culminating, and satisfying scuffle with ole reddo.
