Gaming rage

I got the idea for this thread while reparing my Tekken: DR disc. I had thrown it against the wall in a fit of rage.

My earliest memory of uncontrollable rage resulting from a video game was when I was around twelve years old, maybe older. The game was MegaMan X for the super nintendo. I had just died thrirteen times trying to kill Sigma, and then his fucking dog kills me before I even get to him. I growled and saw red. I was brought out of my rage by a loud cracking sound and I realized I had broken the controller in my adolescent hands (not completely snapped in two, you realize, just broken open to where I could see the innards).

Other games would try my patience. Tekken, of course, was a rage inducing game if there ever was one, but that was because I loved it so much and would not accept anything less than a great performance. And I swear my PS controller worked better after having been thrown against the TV screen several times (the TV not so much).

By far, though, the game that made me the angriest, the one that excited my rage so much that I seriously considered throwing my PS out the window and stomping it into a fine powder to teach it a lesson about insolence was the first Guilty Gear. It was a Japanese copy, I believe, and stupidly difficult. I swear it took some dark delight in torturing me.

I once watched good friend of mine tackle the Rogue Squadron's Raid on Sullust level over 40 times (we counted). In the end he was forced to stop after he leapt into the air, screamed and thumped the floor with the base of his fist. Within minutes his wrist had swollen to the extent that he had difficulty using his hand.

Six months and a whole lot of pain later he finally visited the doctor who diagnosed a bunch of miss-set metacarpal fractures.

All rather unfortunate considering that he isn't prone to fits of rage, and is without a doubt one of the most together people I've ever met - and I don't hand out accolades like that out lightly. The fact that he didn't get himself to the doctor sooner baffles me to this day.

I tend to be fairly calm playing almost any game aside from street fighter. I'm not sure what it brings out in me or if it's particularly healthy. I lost the plot after many attempts at Ryu on the rather optimistic top difficulty setting of SF2 turbo, in the shiny silver box, for the snes. Vega also led to some tantrums but it was Ryu who was responsible for 7 years bad luck and me being in a bit of bother for smashing a wardrobe length mirror.

Forwarding on a good deal more than seven years of happy, fairly chilled, occasional gaming I got ahold of SF3 for the DC and my darker side again emerged. I have not thrown a tantrum as yet but do tend to shout a constant stream of abuse at the telly whether I'm winning or losing. I have not noticed myself doing this with any other game.

I looks like the fractured wrist is in the lead, any advances?

My favorite tale has to do with one of my older brother's outbursts. We had rented Gran Turismo and were getting generally frustrated. My brother lost a race by .01 seconds, and kinda lost it. He took the controller in one hand and began beating the Playstation with the controller. Eventually, the door opened and the disc popped out onto the floor, and my brother proceeded to beat the disc until it broke. We put a little tape on the underside and returned it to Blockbuster.
