Saw Kode9 deliver a tearing set last weekend to a bunch of goths in a Sydney basement.

What are general thoughts on dubstep. Four years ago I would have dismissed this stuff without a thought. Now quite liking it.

Comments? Impressions?

There's a thread about Burial here and one about Dubstep here. My thoughts on Dubstep so far are that a) I love the Burial album b) I haven't heard much else which moves me in the same way but c) you only really understand the music when you hear it over a club PA. Hearing a brief Dubstep set at Bash at few months ago blew me away. The bass quaking ya chest feeling of it live is really something special. Awesome stuff.

I have managed to miss the last two BASH's - I will not do this again!

BTW what did the Goths make of it? I would've assumed - wrongly probably - that the black music elements (heavy bass, emphasis on rhythm) as opposed to noise/trad rock forms would' e made it less appealing to them. Am I wrong?

Dunno - goths seem to be a pretty diverse bunch in terms of taste now.

Plus there were plenty of grime heads & the rucksack crowd in attendance.

Dance music in Sydney tends to be funky house for str8 people and hi-NRG for the Oxford Street crowd - so any kind of darkcore dance music is going to have a pretty niche audience.

It's a weird venue as it is totally goffick - spiders webs on black walls, etc.

I agree that this is music to be physically felt thru a massive sound system.

When it started, my mate (who's not familar with stuff at all) said: "It's like a cocktease version of techno". All build with no release (it did kick-off a bit later mind). But it reminded me of a Simon Reynolds comment about the anorgasmic nature of 2Step back in the day...

Kode 9's album with Spaceape just came out here in the UK, you can get it off places like Boomkat or even, dare I say it, Amazon I think. Haven't got a hold of it yet myself, though I can't help thinking that like the forthcoming Skream album its a quick step a bit too far, I mean Spaceape grates after you've heard his schtik a few times, particularly on Dubstep Allstars vol.3 where he repeats the same rhymes as a mantra over a 70 minute mix. Still, if you want more Burial vibes then it'd be the way to go...
