T.V. is turning me into a simpleton. I am too weak willed to throw it out. Maybe I should do it in a ceremonious fashion? A rite of passage-esque style affair so that I may never return to my awful, lazy ways? In any case a pep-talk would be appreciated.

I like Charlotte Church. Whatever else, she encourages people to be happy about their weight.

I've nothing against Charlotte Church, her show is nonsense though. If you like it thats cool but I don't - and I still watched it.

Weak. Utterly weak.

Well, you could try chucking out your remote control. That way, watching TV means going and touching the actual box, so it's hard work and forces you to exercise, and eventually, you'll only want to watch when there's something worth while on.

StarWhisper

I don't have a remote control as it is.

Unplug the TV?

Eh? No, I meant it...she's often talking about how young women shouldn't feel bad about their bodies...

I see where your coming from, but there is nothing to stop me from having a relapse and plugging it in again.
I tried taping a note to the screen which read:

The secret is self control

Failed.

I want to do away with it once and for all.

Smash it. Into a tip, that is. Don't shoot it. It'll implode, then explode, showering you with fierce triangles of light-speed glass cutting your face and then melting and fusing themselves in there to stick. It happened to me as a teenager. Of course some people childishly told me to "use some Oxy cream mate", no fucking sympathy.

StarWhisper
11:29 / 14.10.06

Aww, thats mean. Well done for shooting your telly though.

I should dress up like john wayne I should.

shooting

It's a nice idea, I think if it didn't hurt it would be satisfying to shoot a tele.

Don't smash it or take it to the tip because you're just contributing to landfill then. Put it on freecycle.

Whats a freecycle?

Buy two more of them. Set them up on a dais at one end of the room, angled toward each other, and an extended series of mirrors that further projects the image throughout your home and even out into the street. This way the process of finding something to watch will be so baroque and disturbing that you'll lose interest. Like writing a novel.

Or you could do what I did- get really into Sunset Beach. After that, all other TV seems pointless.

I'm not joking here.

When is it on? If it clashes with neighbors then then there's no point.

Damn.

I am constructing a tin-foil hat. You're not a mason? ...are you?

I think living without cable is one of the best moves I ever made.

StarWhisper
15:06 / 14.10.06

I get the feeling I will feel the same, but it's a leap of faith I have yet to make. How did you do it Kali?

Was it just plain easy?

What's a freecycle?

This is.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
15:30 / 14.10.06
It isn't easy. I miss a lot of the shows I used to watch but I find that even getting only five channels means more time to spend reading and writing.

If I have any special cable needs, I make the doe eyes at friends.

That's amazing. Thanks for sharing that, it's a really great idea, instills hope and eco-mindedness for the good of the environment!
Unfortunately my tele is a bit of a deathtrap. I can use it fine but I'm not sure anyone would really want it. It doesn't have a scart lead port either. Maybe someone will want it...hmm...

Kali, Queen of Kitteh

I told myself: "Well, after Christmas, I'll get cable." But I'm finding life much more interesting without it. I never realised how noisy a home can be when the idiot box is on all the time. Now that I don't have the temptation of cable, my house is much more quiet. It can be a bit eerie.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

I got cable when I got broadband, and I don't really watch it (except when Big Brother's on). I won't cancel it, though, because occasionally I'll feel like watching some absolute shite and it's nice to know it's there.

I miss Mythbusters. And the Food Network.

But I remain strong....

I just worked out with maths, yes, yes maths, that I spend a minimum of an entire month every year just watching T.V.

If I got the maths right that is.

When you look at it right, telly does seem insidious, doesn't it?

StarWhisper
15:55 / 14.10.06
2hrs of tv per day (min) x 7 days =14hrs per week

x 52 weeks = 728hrs / 24 = 30 days

Please can someone kindly check if I screwed that up?

StarWhisper
16:37 / 14.10.06

I'm doing a numeracy course and thought I'd have crack at a useful sum. Still finding my feet with it really.

Yes, insidious is definately the word. Thats why I don't trust myself to keep it around. I cannot gauge how much I will miss it.

No that's right: 2 hours out of 24 is 1/12th.
1/12th of a year is a month.

I neglected to buy a TV when I moved. It's great, but I spend a lot of time on the computernet. (lost, veronica mars, anime, battlestar galatica, studio 60......)

What you need to do is to take up a good addictive MMORPG. That will wean you off telly (and work, and sleep, and friends and family, and food, and toilet breaks, and...)

You might not miss it that much - I used to watch TV for hours every day, usually crap I didn't really want to see. When the TV broke it felt a bit strange for the first few days, as if there was a gap or hole, but it was amazing how quickly I got used to the lack of a tele.
And I seem to have more time for other things, like reading, playing computer games, wasting time on the internet...it probably helps that I can watch DVDs on my computer though.

Give your telly to freecycle and to celebrate reward yourself invest in one of these and become a turn-off-terrorist, saving others from themselves. You could do me a favour and start in my street.

Oh yeah, downloading television shows is the new monkey on my back.

Torchwood? Gonna download it. Season two Doctor Who? Downloaded it as it aired. The Runaway Bride? Gonna download it.

So: no cable but Bittorent is my new best friend.

What was the name of that pamphlet referenced in I think volume 3 of the Invisibles? 'Test Card X', was it? If you can track it down, it's an interesting polemic on the evils of TV and advertising.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Even stuff that I DO get I tend to download, as I'm really shit at remembering what time/day stuff's on, and can never guarantee that I'll be around.

Yes, that's right, people. I can't muster the commitment required to WATCH TELEVISION. I am teh rubbish.
