I don't know, maybe this shouldn't be a thread, but it seemed important - does anyone have any further details?

Seems that it was a helicopter that hit the 40th and 41st floor of a building on the Upper East side of Manhattan.

Good looking out sleaze... best to be aware of this, even if it turns out to be just an accident.

It looks like it's just a coincidence - or more specifically an accident that people are sensitive towards after September 11th.

Now it's a fixed wing aircraft that hit... conflicting reports. Probably just have to wait this one out...

AP identified the building as the Belaire, a prestigious 50-storey residential tower.

They're showing it a lot on the TVs here. cops have blocked off the street, but there are crowds gathering at the barricades to see what's going on. FDNY reports one fatality so far (I think that'd be the pilot, but with the volume down I can't tell.)

What time did this hit?

An hour and a half ago. I'm watching BBC news now and they're now saying it's too early to know what caused it, but that they do not think it is terrorism.

There have been two deaths.

Something in me loves the aesthetics of the following excerpt from CNN's coverage:

The Federal Aviation Administration described the plane as a "general aviation" fixed-wing aircraft flying under visual flight rules, meaning a pilot was flying by visual landmarks. (Watch the orange flames ravage the apartment -- 1:50)

Gah.

Oh, man -- the TV's reporting that it was the Yankees' pitcher who was piloting the damn plane.

First responders to the New York plane crash say an emergency call was made from the plane indicating a possible fuel problem.

New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre told CNN that the plane that was a Cirrus SR-20 registered to team pitcher Cory Lidle.

From CNN.

Wikipedia´s fast:

Only a few days after the team's 2006 season ended, Lidle was killed when his personal airplane crashed into a 50-story residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

(off-topic- remember a couple of weeks after September 11th when there was a non-terrorism related aircraft crash in New York? I was very drunk when it came on the news, and got into a fight with a guy from work because he thought the lack of terrorism meant it was all OK).

CNN has confirmed his death, along with at least one other.
A friend of my brother's lives right there, and saw the whole thing. Freaky.
