This is brilliant.

Nameless and athletic young Russian man, who will have no knees left by the time you are thirty, I salute you.

Unsurprisingly, this man is now dead.

Ow. That video made my legs go numb, Iamus, especially the bit when he jumps to catch the miniscule handhold.

In the first link, check out the backward somersault at 2.43. It has a similar effect.

Did he die from doing this? 'Cause being afraid of heights myself, that video almost made me ill.

No, he died from "free falling" - kind of base jumping but with climbing ropes.

Article here

I'm now wondering if this thread was a good idea.

Bear's Reach is only 5.7. Sure, the speed-solo is impressive, and DanO was a hell of an athlete, but it's really not that hard or dangerous of a climb - and the hold he threw to is a total jug, despite how the camera angle makes it look (though he did miss it and slip on one try).

Where I live, soloing stuff of this level of difficulty is routine - you cannot go into Eldorado Canyon on a summer afternoon without seeing someone soloing the Bastille Crack (5.7-5.8) and we have a number of soloists at the 5.11 level and harder. What people fail to realize is that your perception of risk changes - for DanO, the Bear's Reach solo was equivalent going for a run up a hill.

That is incredible. What's it called when people run over all the obstacles in an urban landscape? It reminds me of that, which is also amazing.

Parkour, or free running.

There's a thread about parkour in Games and also one in Temple.

It is Parkour as far as I can tell, just in Russia. I found it interesting to see them skipping through those abandoned buildings, which I'm imagining are the crumblings relics of the Soviet Republic.

With reference only to practitioners I have spoken to, I will say that "Parkour" was imported to Europe by some French dude impressed with the athleticism of certain African hunters. The key to their training seemed to be that they always did everything balls-out. "Free running" is the same thing, just more sporty and exhibition-oriented, with the flips and so on.

It's mostly tiny guys who do this well!

Yeah Qoeur d'Lyn is spot on, it's definately from france. I'll check out those other threads. Any chance you could direct me to some images of the Russian guys Pegs?
It's got me all restless thinking about them. Haven't done any urban exploration for ages...

The fuck? I think that makes it even more impressive.

I feel bad for this thread now. I feel like I've unleashed Barbelith's version of Jackass.

No worries, this is nothing like the Barbelith version of Jackass.

On Barbelith Jackass the hosts run into rooms full of open minded sane people and yell things like "Women should stay home to raise the kids"

When I was about 10 I had a friend called Quinton, and one day he discovered the joy of climbing a tall tree and flinging himself out of it. "It's great," he said, "the branches break your fall". He coaxed me up to about...oooh...the second branch, and after a bit of name calling I lept. The branch below did break my fall. Quint's family emigrated to NZ soon after, and I think he may have jumped off bridges. He was quite small, too.

and I thought I was doing well taking the stairs in work.

these guys must have at least a few sprained wrists between them with the strong possibilty of broken necks at every turn.

They even manage to look like they're breakdancing whist trying to hurt themselves

That traffic video's pretty awesome! Also, there's a French Parkour news feature or something via Proinsias's first link.

Wrestling video

This may not be to everyone's taste here, but I love it. Men moving around like greased cats to hurl each other on their heads. Brillant stuff.
