Barbelith Renaissance Project

A lot of people seem to think the Golden Age has passed, a lot of people think it’s all over…

Well, I think if recent history is anything to go by, Barbelith doesn’t need love, or provocation, or to be saved, or burial, or for that matter spurious Conversation threads, but if it could always use anything it would be the considered contributions of all its members. So, if you don’t think Barbelith is a shambling corpse that doesn’t know that it’s dead yet, this is a thread for posting about your desire to make Barbelith continue as a vibrant, engaged cultural space. Not as a last melancholic last hurrah, or a rear-guard action, but as a triumphant community Renaissance*!

To that end, each post could be considered a pledge of what you, as an individual member, feel it’s in your power to do to improve on the discussion, if for no other reason than to act as a spur to your own better instincts, and in specific an ongoing statement of topics and areas you want to contribute in, and a space to suggest positive ideas for how members of Barbelith can continue to maintain its health under the current format. And lots of members probably don’t need this thread, they’re out there doing it already, and that’s great; but for the rest of us:

Ask not what Barbelith can do for you - ask what you can do for Barbelith!

* With, no doubt, all the ignorance, politicking, warfare, cultural elitism and witch-hunts that term implies.

Barbelith certainly won’t fall apart (or notice) if I don’t post anymore, but I guess I’m up first.

Well, modestly, I’m going to try and post more. I’m going to go back to the Early Modern Lit and Kazantzakis threads I started in Books (sure to be crowd-pleasers) and persevere with those replies. I’m going to get through that pile of books and try to find out what the New Weird actually is, and find out what people think.

If I think I can make a productive and on-topic contribution to Policy, then I’m going to, and not just assume several other people will. And at some point I’m going to get stuck into the Head Shop.

And generally, when I get that urge to post, I’m not going to put it off till later, I’m not going to add it to the pile of things to be re-visited, I’m going to get it written, and at the same time I’m going to make damn sure that when I do post I make certain I have something to add and I spend enough time on it to make it valuable.

If there’s anything I’d like Barbelith to be, or rather continue to be, it’s not a collection of people who have certain historical interests and maintain discussion of them, but a space where each specific forum aspires to generate a level of discussion that attracts an ever greater variety and quality of individuals who want to join the conversation. Because that’s the sort of Barbelith I want to be part of, and contribute to as best as I’m able.

Which, for now, is it. Anyone else?

My favorite Barbelith moments have been when some one or group of us have just gone nuts with creativity and make-believe: the mafia games, Jack D's comics, the Barbelith 500 saga, Bedhead's top trumps. I could do more of that stuff.

My favourite bit of the board has always been The Temple. At it's best, it's incredible, an unparelled source of info. To pick just one example, Seth's stuff on NLP should be required reading for anyone interested in the subject. His posts are as much a valuable resource as any textbook on the subject. The same could be said for several other posters in a variety of ares. In some of my favourite threads, there's been a sense of almost "jamming with ideas". Sounds a bit wank, but what I mean is the bits and pieces I know coming together and feeding off of the knowledge of others and forming - if not a consensus - sets of shared understandings.

I'd like that to continue, but at the moment for me, I'm not breaking new ground so I don't feel like I've got much new to say. I have a couple of projects up my sleeve, and lots of ideas, but it's going to be a while before their fruits are digested, and ready to share.

Myself, I'm going to lurk around the board in general, like I always do, adding inconsequential comments and upping the 'fluff' ratio of the board as a whole.

Every now and then I'll come up with a gem, but forget to post it.

That's what I'll do. And I'll do it religiously.

I haven't been around much lately thanks to work and a long commute but I will continue to keep it real 24-7.

When I find myself thinking good things about posters I'm going to let them know.

I'm going to try writing more, shorter posts rather than big essays. If I can allow myself a bit more room to be tentative from time to time and add thoughts that are a bit messy but experimental and creative, (rather than fully formed and beautifully polished) the pressure's off and perhaps I can post more.

The 'lith is an important resource for me and it's worth my lavishing a little more attention on it in recognition of the fact. Treat it like it's special. Bring it flowers, fine wines and luxury desserts. Or, y'know, just start a thread once in a while. I'm really shy about posting but I'll do what I can.

Great idea for a thread, Blake.

I'm going to send more PMs, I think. Let people know they've made me laugh or made me think (or both). I'm also going to challenge iffy, unwelcome attitudes when I come across them and not leave them for someone else to take care of. I've done much too much of that in the past.

Not entirely on-topic, but Barbe-Renaissance-related... it's great to see the place starting to wake up again. The last couple of days have seen idle fora starting to stretch and rub their eyes, and a lot more low-level fun in Conversation.

I'm actually going to make a real effort to start all the threads I've been meaning to but really haven't been arsed with the last few weeks because the place was getting too wearying.

I'm going to start a fight or two about spurious nonsense, old skool stylee. Who would win in a 500m race between Cheetarah and a Lambretta, whether you could make a chocolate cake in the shape of Roy Castle, who would be the best Darts player out of the A Team etc.

Lula, I promise, if next time we both attend a meet you bring a chocolate cake in the shape of Roy Castle, I'll pay you double what the ingredients cost.

I am going to try to help Barbelith thrive by deciphering obscure British pop culture references for the betterment of the Angopopculturally deprived.

Roy Castle: Television presenter. Was once in a Doctor Who movie. Dead.

Cheetarah: British version of Cheetara. Similar to American version, but ate "crisps" instead of "chips" and "chips" instead of "fries." Thundercat. Dead.

Lambretta: Motor scooter. Made by British Motor Corporation, among others. Dead.

A Team: American television show. Dead.

Pegs, I hate to say this, but that's a really disturbing extended metaphor.
