Parrots [PICS]

There was discussion a while ago about starting a thread about parrots because there seems to be a few of us who keep them. Yesterday we got a new parrot called Pebble so now seemed like the ideal opportunity. And basically I can't stop talking about her and want to show her off.

This is Pebble. She's called pebble because her eyes are pebble colour and because she spends hours staring at the sky, perfectly still like a pebble, and she also sits under your chin for ages too. She's nothing like my other parrot, Fawkes. Fawkes is hard and a pirate. Pebble is a ninja parrot (if there is such a thing). We've only known her for about 24 hours but there are loads of differences between the two of them; she's nice to the dog whereas Fawkes just tries to bite him, she doesn't squalk much and when she does it's not ear-splitting, she just sounds like squeaky bike brakes. Fawkes is silly and mucks about, she's much more zen. She also doesn't bite strangers, which is a bonus.

She's only 14 weeks which is tiny baby age in parrot terms. You can tell from her grey baby fluff under her green feathers, and the fact that she doesn't know what food she can eat yet.

I think she's beautiful. And her bright green bloomers make me laugh.

So yes, birds, birds, birds. Tell me about yours.

My mother takes care of tiny parakeets, I have no pictures at the moment.

That baby parrot is adorable though O.

My parrot left one day without a word. Just a few bright jewel-like feathers on the birdcage floor and an open window. I was heartbroken. Then two months later, this came in the mail:

Those photos are amazingly detailed and crisp! Did you use your new canon for that like you did for the macro shot of the trinket, Lula?

Yes I did. It's bloody lovely that camera. It doesn't matter how crap you are at taking the pictures, it just goes, "No, I am expensive and very good at my job. You will have a decent photo, so there."

That's a great parrot Lula and you're right, she is beautiful. I especially like the variegation of the colours on her head.

Oh geez, how did I miss this?

Congratulations on the new flock member, Lula!
She's beautiful and sounds like a pretty special little thang!

How is she settling in?

How is Fawkes taking to her?

Blushing birds, what´s their story? Are they camera shy?

Oh that little yellow thing is lovely Mist!

Fred, is that your bird? Is it a cockatiel?

Van Plague, Fawkes has fallen in love with her, look:

He was suspicious of her for about a day and tried to bite her and then she pecked him on the head and he was so surprised he fell in love and they have been inseparable ever since. Literally. Where one goes you will find the other. So basically hanging around our shoulders all day!

Alas, no, that is not my pet. Self & partner both allergic to everything but pickles. I wish! I hear people talking about their pets and they seem to bring so much joy.

How do you keep yr parrots, Lula?

I really want one, but I'm also opposed to cages, particularly for birds. Much problem with them shitting all over the place?

Oh, they're both beautiful by the way. That last shot of them both is too squee for words.

Words other than squee, that is.

My parrots live in a huge cage at night and then on a portable perch that The Beautiful man made during the day. And on our shoulders. And in our bed in the morning. Most of the time they move from room to room with us and in the summer they spend a lot of time outdoors in the trees in our garden. They love it there. They sing all day.

My parrots are toilet trained, to the extent that you can say, 'toilet' and hold them over the bin or the sink or the loo and they will go. This does not mean they don't accidentally do it on you, because they do, but they don't really like to. Most of the time they fly off and do it on their perch instead. One problem we have is that ours like to perch on the towel rail in the bathroom and go down the back of that, and I can't reach very easily to clean it up.

Anyway. I thought I'd post a couple of pictures of them having a bath in the tree this morning. We spray them with water. They love it. Happy parrots.
