Want to see some new, original Sean Phillips comic art? Follow link at bottom of page then.

Working in magazines is great! Cos it throws up great opportunities to work with illustrators . . . . .

Like Sean Phillips, cover and interior artist for the Invisibles and an artist whose work I’ve been following since Crisis in 1988 . . I can still remember his two sexy punks kissing in the graveyard . . . . yeah?

Anyway – as deputy editor of a construction magazine I was able to suggest him as the artist for a feature we were doing on corruption in the industry. In order to make the feature halfway interesting we thought small, two panel comic ‘strips’ would be a good way to show how corruption works.

Remembering a two page piece Phillips did for the Sunday Herald last year - for the G8 summit in Gleneagles (that featured Blair Bush gabbing away about life, the universe etc.) - I recommended him to our fantastic art editor who agreed that he would be great for the job.

So she contacted him and he was up for it.

It was such a buzz to get the thumbnail through and then suggest tweaks to make the art more communicative to a construction audience etc.

I love magazines man, love em.

The story is called: Ring any bells: You can see the work here:

Nice one, mate. Phillips is probably the most consistently underrated penciller in American comics. I love him.

Visually, Sean Phillips' run on The Invisibles - Jay Stephens on inks - was my favourite chunk of the whole series. I'd hardly have recognised these as being the work of the same guy. There's something pleasantly seventies about them, you used to see plenty of this type of thing in publications back then.

Nelson (hi!) - I totally agree - the '70s thing - it was partly why I wanted him to do the piece. seemed so appropriate. I think the guy with the tash seals it! he's got a Rockford Files kinda vibe.

Everyone's on board for the Criminal Signing Tour this month, yeah?

[gloat]I'm getting a double page spread from The Invisibles that I aquired for my 21st on Friday signed[/gloat]

I love that piece, his colour work is fantastic, so bright and clear, but not drowning anything out.
