Last year, I got my hands on a lot of music, that I´ve still not processed fully. I often put the many albums on my mp3-player, put the player on random, and when I liked a song, I looked what band it was, and listened to more of their stuff.
Among those files were the songs of two albums by Porcupine Tree, Lightbulb Sun and In Absentia. And their songs came up more and more, when I thought: "Wow! what´s that then?" and looked at my mp3-display.
I´m not very good at describing the sound of bands. Maybe a very rough idea of their sound would be a mix of Flaming Lips and Tool. And Porcupine Tree are at least as goods as any of those two groups.
They have everything a good progressive rock band needs. Meandering long solos, the singer is often detached and very intimate at the same time, and the mood can be "down" but also uplifting, too. It puts me into a mood, as, when I was a pupil, I had finally managed to shake off the teachers and could wander around the old mysterious museum by myself.
I´d recommend the songs "Lightbulb Sun", "Shesmovedon" and "Trains" to get a first impression of this wonderful band.
Over the years, many of my favourite bands have become unlistenable to me, because I seem to have assimilated all their ideas; and the moods, their music put me into, hold no more surprises for me (The Smiths, Tocotronic, Velvet Underground being examples). To be fair, this might happen with Porcupine Tree, too. But right now, I can´t imagine it. There are no fillers on the two mentioned albums. Right now, I´m listening to their last record (Deadwing, 2005), and on the first listen, it´s holding up quite well to those two gems.
Anyone else know this band, and can add something? Hopefully you can describe what they´re about more clearly than me? |
