This is out in the US in limited release now, and I believe it goes wider next week. I did a whole review on my blog, but I'll give the nonspoiler summary here. I think Gondry's one of the most visually innovative filmmakers, and with Eternal Sunshine, he showed he could do really strong character based emotional stuff too.
Science of Sleep takes a lot of the themes of Eternal Sunshine, but fits them into a framework that takes full advantage of Gondry's visual talents. In a lot of ways, the film feels like a more personal remake of Eternal Sunshine, not to overstate the similarities, but the emotional feel of the two pieces are very similar. However, this one feels at once more real and more unreal. If other people have seen it, there's a lot to talk about, but most of it would go into spoilers, so all I'll say it go see this, it's unlike any other film I've ever seen, and is both fun and sad, you won't be disappointed. |
