Halfway through listening to this at the moment. And fuck me if it isn't BRILLIANT. I thought Leviathan had set the bar pretty fucking high. Then Tool came out with 10,000 Days, and I started to worry (because I do. I worry about these things) how Mastodon could possibly even compete with that. Although Tool kind of cheated by shifting the goalposts- no longer prog metal, they're now more "just prog" but prog that rocks out, and rocks out well.

Mastodon have fucking pulled it out of the bag, on the strength of the five tracks I've heard so far. Like on Leviathan, they switch between genres of metal effortlessly. Given that it took Leviathan about four or five listens before it became one of my all-time favourite albums, I reckon by the weekend I'll be absolutely head-over-heels in love with this. All signs are positive. It rocks a honey badger's ass.

It's intense. It's odd. It's heavy. The drumming is incredible. Without any word of a lie, this might be one of the best metal releases ever. No, wait. That's Leviathan. But this is fucking close. I need to listen to it a little bit longer before I can write anything interesting about the CD.

Just listening to CRACK THE SKYE now... been holding off, even though it came out a few days ago, because I pre-ordered the really nice box set, but I had to steal it off the internets after a while.

Damn, this is good so far. And this is the first track, which I'm reliably informed is "the crap one". Bracing for awesome...

Mind you, my ears STILL hurt from seeing them twice in one weekend in December. That was with a guitarist missing, admittedly, but the second time I was all fucked-up on 2ci and they had THE FUCKING MELVINS on stage with them (so, three drummers!!!) which was... almost religious as an experience. I DID get busted straight after that gig, but that's a different story...

OK. This is BETTER than Blood Mountain. Possibly as good as Leviathan... maybe better.

Fuck, this is ALL I am listening to right now.

A lot catchier and more song-oriented than their earlier stuff, but still... FUCK, those drums are good. And why settle for a note when a riff could be just about crammed in there?

THIS IS A MASTODON SANDWICH. IT IS MADE OF METAL AND AWESOME.
