Even though my favourite gay rapper is and will forever be Jay-Z, last night I went to the one-night-only Sydney screening of Pick up the mic, a doco about queer rappers. My feeling was that it could either be really awesome or really bad, and there wasn't going to be much middle ground. I was pretty much right, and it leans heavily towards the awesome. As a doco it's not brilliantly put together - it has a structure that's difficult to pull off, following maybe a dozen different individuals and groups one after the other, and a couple of them really don't merit the screen time they get. But over all, it's a really inspiring and rad film, despite the preponderance of boring boom bap throwback beats. The MCs represented are a diverse group in terms of gender and sexuality, race and class, styles and ambitions. And most of them can really spit.
Based on seeing it once, the stand outs were Jenro - the best lyricist, awesome flow - and Johnny Dangerous, the best all-round perfomer with great production and charisma to spare. Katastrophe also had a wicked flow, Eminemish, with smart political lyrics. Ganesh needs to check out the incredibly sweet bear rapper, Aggracyst. They all have myspace pages. Also, gayhiphop.com has a bunch of links to lgbt rappers' pages if you want to check them out.
So we just had a thread for Kendall, and I thought it would be good to have a more general thread. Who do you like? Who do you hate? And, is Masta Killah really out, as the review of his album posted on gayhiphop.com would seem to indicate?
Meanwhile, check out the opening of the doco - Dreadlee and Dutchboy will a killer cut called 'No Fags Allowed' - here. |
