Update 1:
We did our first session yesterday. The session was done without Miss Wonderstarr being told when the reiki would happen.
I started with a choku rei and some hands-on on and around MW's left eye, then moving around the whole of her face and head. Focus was made on the cheek bone as well. A few dai ko myos were sent in, some for the whole body/aura and some specifically located (cheekbone, eye, third eye, heart chakra). Hands-on on the third eye and the heart chakra.
I then did an 'unaimed' sei heki, with a few choku reis thrown in to aid it along. After this, i did a bit more hands on on MW's third eye, heart chakra and hara, and then on her ribs, to help ease any memories that may be clumped there.
It all seemed to go well from my end of things but obviously the proof lies in the effects. I'm not sure if there have been any effects so far that can be specifically ascribed to the reiki, but i'll let Miss Wonderstarr comment on that...
As i've said, we're starting off relatively light and unfocussed, but plan to move on to more direct and 'immersive' treatments (assuming MW is cool with this..) - asking the sei heki for specific helps, spending more time working on all the chakras etc.
We are planning to do a session on Wednesday where we will both set aside a specific time, so that MW can be on the look-out for specific effects and sensations. We will alternate between setting aside specific times and me sending reiki 'whenever', to see if there are any notable differences in what happens.
On a personal aside: I'm feeling quite happy and excited about helping with this treatment and putting it up on this thread, but i'm also a bit self-conscious about the whole thing.
It feels a bit odd writing 'and then i did x y and z with a special energy twist!' - a bit 'show and tell' - but i agree with MC's comment above that we should interrogate our practices. I'm interested to find out what other reiki practitioners think of how i'm going about things and i'm interested in finding out how they'd go about things, too. I figure i need to put up what i'm doing if this is going to happen.
If people have any tips, comments, ideas etc. I'd be grateful to receive them. Likewise, if anyone would rather i wrote a bit less, or if they feel i'm being a bit 'look at me!', then please say.
Grant - I really like your ideas for the double-blind test and agree that it wouldn't be all that difficult to arrange. One problem that i can forsee is the potential unwillingness of the 'patient'. In some cases, people can play the 'i want reiki/i dont want reiki' game, where they ask for it, but end up refusing it for whatever reason. As reiki won't work on somebody who doesn't want it, there could be an issue arising where the patient ends up saying 'yeah, i didnt feel nothing!', simply because they refused to let anything happen.
This (along with other reasons) might make reiki difficult to test in a scientific manner. A process that works so closely with human consciousness and will, and that can be affected by these things can be pretty hard to pin down.
I'd still like to give the testing a shot, though, and if we could find a way to work around or incorporate this issue, i think we could have a damned good time trying it all out.
I was daydreaming the other day about working out a test with small pots of watercress, or some other herb that you get in little plantpots. You could get a few of these pots and treat each one in a different way - give some reiki, leave some without. Take photos everyday and see if there are any noticeable effects... |
