I saw these guys live last night here in Sherbrooke, and was duly impressed. The good news: their album is available for free at seedsound, and well worth the paltry bandwidth.
I'm loving it... a love that's partly informed by a real fondness for Quebec folk reels (the drumming is pure folk-reel, as are those familiar fiddle strains), which is a sound they kind of pull through a Boards of Canada atmosphere.
I'm currently rampaging through the rest of the seedsound catalogue, and I really like it.
On the same page as the Banjo Consortium download, the Magnetic Assassin EP has a you-can't-go-wrong summary:
“Pure Sunshine” came about when my roommate, who is a badass West African drum player, talked about wanting to hear a song made from a cat purring. Thus, a sample of Derrick Jensen’s cat and some West African disco beats ended up in a track with a woman reminiscing about the first time she tripped with the CIA during their MK-Ultra experiments. For some reason, that struck me as the perfect vocal to go into an upbeat party jam. |
